I HAD SURGERY JULY 13 09 MY STARTING WEIGHT WAS 255LBS. AS OF TODAY I AM NOW 190LBS. I HAVE LOST 65LBS IN 3MTH AND 2WKS. I HAVE WENT FROM A TIGHT SIZE 22 TO A LOOSE FITTING 14. I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT SIZE I AM I HAVEN'T WENT SHOPPING YET BUT I HAD SOME OLD CLOTHES THAT I DECIDED TO TRY OUT. I'M EATING WITH OUT GETTING SICK BUT I KNOW I'M NOT EATING THE RIGHT THINGS. SINCE SURGERY (WHEN I WAS ALLOWED TO EAT SOLIDS) I HAVE BEEN CRAVING CARBS. I DOUBT I EVEN GET 20GRAMS OF PROTIEN IN A DAY. IT'S BEEN DIFFICULT TO EVEN FORCE MYSELF TO EAT ANYTHING I DON'T HAVE A CRAVING FOR. I HAVEN'T GOTTEN BOLD ENOUGH TO TRY SWEETS YET AND I DON'T THINK I WILL SOME HOW I JUST GAVE SWEETS UP (COLD TURKEY) . AS FAR AS MY VITAMINS I'M LACKING THE MOTIVATION ON TAKING THOSE TOO. ANYONE WANTING THIS SURGERY JUST MAKE SURE YOUR SURE THIS IS SOMETHING YOU CAN AND ARE WILLING TO DO FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. AS FOR ME I AM STARTING ALL OVER ON MONDAY TO GET BACK ON TRACK. I SWEAR THIS IS AN EXCELLENT PROCEDURE AND I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER TO HAVE HAD IT DONE, BUT I ALSO DON'T WANT TO DIE NOW THAT I'VE HAD IT AND CAN'T KEEP UP MY END OF THE GASTRIC BYPASS DEAL JUST WANTED TO PUT AN UPDATE OUT THERE FOR MY OH FAMILY AND THOSE WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT HAVING THE SURGERY.

I am almost 3 months out too, and I feel your pain. I HATE protein powder.  I am able to swallow regular vitamins now. Can you?  The chewables were just gross, but I don't have a problem with the regular pills.

Maybe you can take regular ones too.

20g of protein is not enough.  Wanna see what happens when you don't get in your protein?? Make a visit to Kennestone Wellstar and sit with Lookingup (Jama) a few minutes.  It is NOT a pretty sight.   Tubes and needles going everywhere!  Now, she couldn't get protein in because of complications, so it's not her fault she's sick, but you definitely don't want to get in her condition when you can prevent it.

If you continue not to get in your nutrition, you are going to be malnourished. You will get nauseated and you won't be able to eat then because it will make you feel sick. You may even vomit when you eat. Are you feeling that way now? If so, you may already need to get iv protein.

It is a vicious cycle... not enough protein and water ---> get dehydrated and malnourished ----> get nauseous and can't eat ---> can't  get in protein and water because you're sick ---->get even more dehydrated and malnourished.

This will pretty much go on until you get iv protein and/or  fluid or you DIE or you get put on an old lady feeding tube (sexy huh). What good will it be to be skinny on a feeding tube?

                                                             So NOT CUTE!

I guess you know this already, but sometimes you have to hear it again to get yourself back on track.

Hearing my OH buddy Izzy describe the protein iv infusion she had to endure was enough of an eye opener to get me to force it down. And, I did have to FORCE it in cause I just had an acute aversion to food post op.

I was blessed to have a good support system to get me back on track.  Izzy called me 3x a day to tell me to stop whatever I was doing and eat NOW!  Ginger bossed me around too. But, that was what I needed to keep me accountable.

I second Jeannie's suggestion. Get a good support system and ask for help.  Family and friends are a blessing, but nobody can understand this if they haven't lived it themselves. The online OH site is good, but it can't compare to a real live someone looking you in the eye and putting their arms around you and telling you they're gonna kick your ass if you don't start acting right and eating properly.

Also, call your surgeon. I know it is embarrassing to think you failed/cheated/didn't comply...  But, that's what you gave him that boatload of money for.  He needs to know what's going on and evaluate you for any complications you may be causing.  He may also give you some tips to get back on track.  Believe me you are not the first post op to not comply.

Post more often on the board. We're here in this together.  PM me if you want to chat offline.

Hi,
I know it is hard.  Everyone thinks this is the easy way, but it is not.  My psychologists told me you have to be very organized to be able to keep up with all of this.
I have sheets that my NUT gave me to record my food, vitamins and fluids on.  Get some of these or PM me a fax number and I'll fax you a blank one.  You can do this.  We are all in this together and will help anyway we can.
I'm not hungry either, but I make myself eat on a schedule.
Check out the different boards and see what people with RNY surgery are eating.  This is my schedule.
Breakfast 6:45 - 7:00
Snack 9:45 - 10:00
Lunch 11:45 - 12:15(somewhere in that time period)
Snack 3:00 - 3:15
Dinner 6:00 - 6:15
Snack 8:30 - 8:45
I use the bariatric advantage chewable vitamins, iron and calcium citrate chews and they are pretty good once you get used to them
Do you have a nutritionists at your surgeons office?  If you do, please call them and talk with them.  Maybe even see if you can talk to a counselor or someone who can help you through this.  I went back to mine after surgery just to talk with him and it really helped.
Please take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing!!  We do care!
Linda
