??drug/alcohol screen???
Ok so I though I was pretty much done other then the pulmologist untill I clarified it with Dr. Duncans office who says I need a drug and alcohol screen and a statement of attendance to a bariatric support group.. has anyone else had to do a drug an alcohol screen??? Is this new or what , I don't drink or do drugs so it's not an issue to do it I just thought it was odd and since 2006 have never heard it till now even when I went to dr.duncan's seminar and got that packet with the list of stuff we need it's not on there so I guess i am confused, neither is the support group it just states that the packet we get at the seminar will be proof we were there. Does anyone know what the statement of attendance is ??? Do I get the drug and alcohol screen from my pcp????? aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh I am so aggravated I was one thing away now they throw more at me sheeeeeshhhh!!!
Probably the reason for the drug & alcohol screening is to make sure that you will be compliant with the regiment after the surgery. I am going to present the flip side of the coin on the drug/alcohol screening....
If you had a drug and/or alcohol problem, and they told you in advance that you would need to do one, you might be able to get yourself cold stone sober before the test because you would know it would be coming up. But if you dont know that you have to have one until the last minute, you cant prepare yourself in advance to 'pass' the test. Sometimes doctors will also do the 'smoke' test right before your surgery (literally the morning of your surgery) to be sure that you have quit smoking and do not have any nicotine in your system.
My thoughts about all the various 'hoops' that you have to 'jump' through is...to see exactly how 'healthy' or NOT that you are because obesity affects people so many different ways. Also, it is to see how dedicated you are going to be to losing the weight. I have heard of some doctors that will not perform the surgery if the patient gains weight between initial consult and the pre-op appointment...even if they do not prescribe for you to lose 'X' number of pounds.
