I just peeped at my claims on Cigna.com and here are the bills sent in for my DS surgery so far.

Dang I have some bling in me. Those staples must be a grand a piece!!!

07/28/2009 SCHOFIELD MD CARL N                  PAID $26.00

07/28/2009 CENTENNIAL MED CTR                   PAID $62,820.50

07/28/2009 KILLMAN MD KATHRYN R                PAID $4,006.

07/28/2009 HOUSTON MD HUGH L                   IN PROCESS $8,500.00

         $75,352.50   OMG

I guess money really doesn't grow

on trees. It grows in hospitals!

I wonder who Carl is. They must have paid him $26 for turning on the lights or wiping my nose or something???

Now, I know Cigna will lowball these doctors and not pay all they were billed, but this is an expensive procedure. All the bills have not even been submitted yet! I didn't know it would cost this much!

How do self-pays do it?

You swallow very hard, mutter under your breath, wipe the sweat off your brow and write the check.

(Doctors will often time do self-pays at a lower rate since there is no administrative overhead to pay for jacking with the insurance company to get their money.  Hospitals will still break it off in your ass!  Pays to shop around before committing to having it done.)

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

The statement from Northside for my stay was over 98K! Like you said, Cigna will get much less, but sheesh! (That includes my little excursion to ICU.)

Was Carl the anesthesiologist?  Or was that Kathryn?  My guess is, one was anesthesia and the other was "surgical assistant".  What I can't believe is the hospital bill!  WOW!  And you didn't have any complications, right?

No complications, but it was a top notch facility.  Iwouldn't have changed a thing. I guess you get what you pay for...

I don't know what Carl did for $20, but I hope he has another income source.

I had to look.  Dr. Carl is the radiologist.  His $20 was probably for about 3 minutes of his time.  Kathryn was the anestesiologist, hence why she got more money.  She was probably even more important than the surgeon himself!

Hi LaSelle,
The hospital bill alone for my surgery was $61,438.90,,,,,,,,,of that the insurance company paid the hospital a whopping $3,281.56!!  THAT is incredible!  Guess that is why healthcare is so expensive,,,,the hospital has to charge BIG DOLLARS to get little dollars.  I'm glad they finally decided to cover your claim though.
Best of luck to you.

Would be interested in how much your insurance actually pays.  IF hospital & Dr's would not bill so much they might get paid more.

All things being relavent, I don't understand how you would think they would get paid MORE if they charge LESS????  Having worked in the medical field for over 36 years, I can tell you that if they charged less they would be paid even less than they are now.  How can $3,281. 36 pay for nursing services, Oprating Room, sterilization of surgical supplies, electricity, medication, equipment, etc for a 3 day hospital stay?
