Place to stay around Atlanta Medical Center

Hello everyone...
Does anyone know of a cheap (maybe just inexpensive) hotel around Atlanta Medical Center?  I have been approved for surgery, but I do not have a date yet.  My mother will be the one that has to drive me home, and I am not sure if I should bring my 15 year old son or not.  But mostly I just need to know that they are safe and that my mom can find her way back to the hospital to get me!  Is there something like a "Ronald McDonald House"?
I would love to stay at the "W" or one of those ritzy places, but that ain't happening!
Thanks for the help!

Congradulation on your wls. Since you will only probably be there overnight I would suggest that you allow her to stay in your room the chair lets out into a bed and I don't think that you son might be comfortable. I hope this helps this is where I had wls and Dr. Hobson uses this hospital and also they will make you comfortable.

MY GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD, BELIEVE!!

There is a Hospitality House in Atlanta. It offers FREE lodging to out of town guests and their families.

My mom stayed in the Hospitality House in Nashville last week when I had my surgery. We didn't have to pay anything.  We were given a complimentary room at the Extended Stay.  The hotel was very nice and not cheap and cheezy.

They have Hospitality House facilities in most major cities.  Here is the info for the Atlanta House.  Contact them asap. They will likely have a waiting list.

About ATLHHH

renovation_about_1 renovation_about_2

Since 1981 the Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House (AHHH) has quietly been serving a special group of individuals. The Hospitality House has strived to provide a "home away from home" to outpatients and caregivers of patients hospitalized in an Atlanta area hospital.

We offer lodging, meals, supportive companionship, and other needs and ask our guests to only make a donation of $10.00 per night. AHHH is a fully independent non-profit organization.

During our history we have served over 20,000 families and individuals with a wide range of medical conditions, including many types of cardiovascular problems, cancer, tuberculosis, transplants, and other medical afflictions.

The Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House accommodates anyone as long as they have been referred by the hospital chaplain's or social worker's office and live 40 miles outside of Atlanta.

We also will accommodate guests who are not immediate family members, often times we accommodate aunts, uncles, cousins, close family friends and even ministers. We work together with the above facilities to provide lodging when they are full. For over 20 years we have made a difference in the lives of individuals who have nowhere else to turn for much needed assistance.

We currently provide service to patients and family members at 21 area hospitals including; Emory University Hospital, the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Crawford Long Hospital, Regency Hospital - Atlanta, Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, Dekalb Medical Center, Kennestone Hospital, Shepherd Center, Grady Medical Center, Crawford Long, Kindred Hospital and the Atlanta Medical Center.

The House is staffed on a 24-hour basis. Individuals with family members who are extremely ill often remain at the hospital during most of the day and overnight. These individuals are welcome to use the House during the day to rest, bathe, do laundry, have dinner, watch television, call relatives back home, or just relax and visit. Individuals are permitted to stay as long as the patient or outpatient is receiving treatment at an area hospital. The average length of stay is six days, but stays range from one night to several months.

Historically, contributions from businesses, foundations, churches, civic and veteran's organizations, individuals, guests and former guests, as well as fundraising events, have fully supported our budget. We are very proud that approximately 15% of our operating budget comes from guests and former guests.

The House spends approximately $44 per guest per day. If a guest were staying in a local hotel, eating out and incurring other expenses related to out-of-town living, they would be spending an average of $185.00 per night. We provide an incredible service to individuals who otherwise would be placed in an extremely difficult financial position when they are already having a health-related crisis. In healthcare today, patients whether insured or not receive medical care while the burden of expenses incurred while caring for their loved ones falls on the family. Without our help, these individuals would be forced to sleep in waiting rooms.

We are honored to play a part in the health and welfare of others. Please continue to support our mission and keep us in your prayers that we can remain a "home away from home" for those in need.

Mary Ann Manley House

The Mary Ann Manley house is a home away from home
Imagine having a family member who's rushed to the hospital. Then, imagine he has to stay in the hospital for an extended period of time. The last thing you need to worry about now is where to stay. That's why Atlanta Medical Center and Georgia Power teamed up to build and maintain the Mary Ann Manley House, located at Atlanta Medical Center near downtown Atlanta.

The Mary Ann Manley House has 12 rooms. Each room includes two queen size beds. The house also includes a kitchen, laundry facilities and recreation areas. It is available to people who live more than 50 miles from Atlanta and who have family members admitted to Atlanta Medical Center or any other Atlanta hospital for a limited period of time.

Looking at the quaint, two-story brick home with its beautiful front porch and nicely landscaped yard, you would expect the stay in the house to be very costly. However, the staff at the Mary Ann Manley House only asks for a payment of $10 per guest per night and is open based on availability. The house is maintained by Atlanta Medical Center's staff.
Please download and complete a couple of short application forms to speed your registration process to stay at the Mary Ann Manley House.
For more information about the Mary Ann Manley House, please call (404) 265-6800.

Both of these places request a $10 per noght donation. If you can't pay the $10 ask for a financial waivier and it will be FREE. They will not turn you away.

I suggest getting on the wait list for both, so you will have a backup plan.

If they end up not having a space for you, they will likely refer you to a hotel they partner with that wil offer a discounted rate.  Have some cash or a credit card just in case you need a backup plan.

As far as staying at the Ritz you can try your luck at Priceline. You will likely get a sizeable discount if you bid and name your own price. However, you may not get the exact location you want.  Also those 4* and up hotels are really nice, but  rarely offer complimentary breakfasts, etc.  They will also charge $10=20 per day parking for a downtown location.

Maybe you can treat yourself to a nice room for 1 night pre-op and move your family to a more affordable one while you're in the hospital.  My mom only left my room to shower and for brief naps. An expensive room would have been a waste of money.

Do you know anyone that works at a hotel? They can book a family and friends room for you. Even if they work at a smaller hotel, they can often book at anything in their chain. For example if they work at a Sheraton they can book at a W.... If they work at a Fairfield Inn they can book a Marriott ...  Family and Friend rates are usually about $39-$49 per night.

An OH angel allowed me to use her friends rate when I went to see Dr. Houston last month.  She booked a room for me at a Marriott in Nashville.  I saved well over $100 for a really nice room with her gifted discount.

Refer back to my recent post "Thinkin Outside the Box". We sometimes have to look at creative ways to get the things we need!

BTW sorry for the info overload. Can you tell I'm tired of being cooped up in the house?  I never thought I'd say this, but  I can't wait to get back to my job!

Lisa you asked if you should bring your son.  YES.  He and youe mom can swap out caretaker time, so she doesn't get drained. Since she has to drive home, she needs to get her rest.

The guest bed/chair in the room is probably not all that comfy.  He can sleep in your room overnight and she can go back to the hotel for a good nights rest.

My son chickened out and didn't go with me. I think he was more emotionally scared about me having the surgery than I knew.   He had been holding it all in and didn't want to upset me by letting me know.  I am his only parent, so I can imagine how he probably worried about losing me.

If your son is willing, I suggest taking him.  He wil also learn from watching the nurses how to care for you when you get home. Plus, down the road he will appreciate what you went through to get to your goal.

I am feeling reat, just a little bored and lonely. I need to get out of this house, but don't have much energy or desire to do anything.   I didn't realize how much time I used to spend eating out, cooking and WalMarting.  None of that is appealing this week. WalMArt is out because of all the food temptaions.

I may go to the park or the library a little later when it cools off.

Honey if you feel up to walking tomorrow, I can meet you in the park close to the library. That is really a nice park, no hills that are really that bad. I promise to take it easy on you.
