UHC SHBP: Getting started

I am new to the boards here.  I have United Healthcare through the SHBP.  I have been reading most of the boards for awhile.

I am thinking of chosing Dr. Champion for my WLS.  I have only got the 5 page packet of forms to fill out.  Do I need to talk to UHC first...I think  Dr. Champion's website said fill out the forms and they would talk to your insurance to find out what you need to do.  I know this will be a long process.  I just need some advice on where to start.

Are you sure Dr. Champion on on UHC provider list?  I'm not 100% sure he is.  He does surgery at Northside, so you are safe there.

I would also implore you to check him out completely before choosing him.

Thanks, Well, I haven't done anything yet.  I have just made the decision to have WLS.  I have been thinking about it for years!  My sister had gastric bypass in 2003 (Dr. Daly).

So,  I am just starting.  I don't know if I have to call UHC and get assigned a nurse or whatever the correct term.  Or, if I choose a doctor first and fill out forms. I was thinking of Dr. Champion...but maybe that is not a good idea.

Yes you need to call uhc and get a case manager. you can also go on and look for a surgoen.

Ask uhc for a list of approved surgeons if you don't have one already.

Try to go to at least 2 or 3 seminars to compare your options, amd learn about all the surgery types. .

You will ned to do a 6 mos supervisxed diet and 6 mos of supoport group meetings. Start that right away. Those 2 things will take the longest. Everything else will fall into place as you need it to be completed.

Well 2 months ago I went to a "Doctors Weight Loss" clinic...sort of "doc in a box".   I only went one month.  Would this be considered "doctor supervised"?  Does my 6 months have to start after I have a case manager?

Thanks.
