Just starting my journey
I am from the Atlanta area and just now starting my journey with weight loss surgery. I am atteding a seminar on Tuesday night at Emory Johns Creek and hopefully will be able to schedule my appt with Dr. Hart within the next few weeks. I have done some research and want to have the lap band done. I would love to talk with others who are just starting or in the niddle of their journey with this. I welcome any comments and advice!
Hey BN. You have come to the right place for advice and support. I am in the middle of my process. Right now I am waiting on all my paperwork to be submitted to insurance. I started out wanting lapband, but after research decided on the DS. I have a lot of weight to lose, so I think it will be better for me.
The best advice I can give is:
1. Be patient. It won't happen overnight.
2. Research, research, research! study all the surgery types and make sure you're choosing the best one for you.
3. Go to as many seminars and support meetings as you can. you always learn something new at each one. even if you aren't using a particular surgeon, you may learn something at his seminar.
4. Be very analytical of negative info and posts you may receive about any particular surgeon or procedure. What is horrible for one person, may not be the same for you. This is your body and your decision. Ultimately it is all your choice.
5. Get connected with a local support group asap and stay active. This is a hard journey, and you don't have to do it alone. There are thousands of us going through the same thing. All you have to do is reach out for support and you will find it.
If you have a GA Pines library card, check out some wls books. I recommend: Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies, Weight Loss Surgery by Barbara Taylor Bradford, and Khalia Ali's book Fighting Weight. She had lap band. I checked all these out plus a few more, but these in my opinion were the best. If they don't have them at your local branch, they will ship them to you for free. Just ask the librarian.

Hi there!
I too am just beginning on my path to a healthy, beautiful new me!
I live in the Augusta area, and I just today got my first appointment scheduled with my Surgeon, Dr. Blaney for May 28th. I am so excited!
You should definitely continue to gather as much information about your selected procedure as you can prior to your initial appointment. Also, you should get with your insurance company to determine what they will and will not cover with regards to the entire process, not just the surgery itself. There is quite a bit involved!
Another thing you can do to make things easier on yourself is start your diet NOW. I started mine 3 days ago and already lost 4lbs!
You have definitely come to the right place, obesityhelp.com is a fountain of useful information and support for people like you and I. I look forward to taking this journey with you!
