Thank God its been scheduled. The paperwork went in on the 02/26/09 and was approved in less than 15 days. I'm having th RNY and I cant wait for the journey to begin.

Any advice for the first week of post-op? What's the one or couple of things you wish you had known?

Congratulations!! I'll say prayers for you also.  I don't know how much I'll be online after surgery, but I'll try to let you know about my experience before you go in.

Good luck on your surgery!   You will do fine.  I wish I had known I would have so much GAS PAIN!!  All gone now though and feeling great!  My RNY was open, so that is probably why I had so much gas.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery!! It will be here before you know it.
Make sure you have some samples of different protein shakes/drinks. Don't buy any big containers yet. They all taste different and your tastes may change after surgery. But, get lots of different samples. Vitalady.com sells samples for $1.99 each.  Sometimes my hubby would have to make 3 or 4 before I found one I could drink. I'm really picky....The smell gets me. I suggest some kind of a cup with a lid to help cut out some of the smell. Also make sure you have your chewable or liquid multi-vitamin, Calcium and B12 already at home.
That's all I can think of. Good luck!!

Wonderful news!!!! Im so excited for you!!!

I wish I would have know the gas pain part too.. It was pretty scary as it moved around in my back and in parts that confused me!
It lasted longer than I expected a couple of weeks but other than that I pretty much expected what I experienced based on my research.

Good luck!!
Hugs.

Being four days post-op, this is fresh in my mind.  I knew a few of these pre-op -- from OH, of course -- but they are top of my list of recommendations.

1.  Have a small, firm pillow handy to apply pressure to your stomach for support when you stand up, sit down, lay down, cough, etc.  Have it for the hospital and to take with you and at home.  It makes a world of difference.

2.  Use small cups (a few ounces) for your liquids, especially if you find you don't have pain when you drink.  I learned the hard way that I'm a gulper and can drink more than I intend to without thinking.

3.  Get a dose of pain meds as close as possible to when you actually leave the hospital (or have a filled prescription available right away.)  It was almost six hours from my last dose to when I finally got checked out, then the rush hour ride home and the trek to the drugstore and wait for prescriptions.  I felt okay when I left the hospital but was miserable by the time I got home and could take the meds.

4.  Practice rolling in and out of bed.  While I was struggling in the hospital, the nice tech told me to sit on the bed and then drop my shoulder down towards the pillow.... and then roll onto my back.  That really helped a lot.  And using a pillow when you get up also helps.

5.  Use a large pill box with the days of the week so you can keep track of all your meds and you don't wonder if you took something or not.

Best of luck in your journey!
