So I made it to the appointment with a friend. It was long I geuss about 1-2 hours long. Dr Lin was seeing a cancer patient at the hospital in need, so he missed his patients in the clinic and instead I saw a resident, and then a doctor with the group. They were very informative and really answered all my questions. There did not hesitate with anything to say it bluntly.

The concern for me is I am the Atypical patient, and I have Coronary Microvascular Disease, Coronary Artery Disease, have had 3 myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), and have a 9% bloodflow reduction to my heart.
The doctor said the concern to realize is that the bypass is a 3 hour surgery, so they will have given my muscle relaxers to relax the muscles and my heart with be sedated for 3 hours although he said they would try to get it done in 2. It is grave concern for heart attack on the table, stroke, pulmonary embolism. Not to mention all the smaller concerns like leakage and so on.
We are going to try to subit for the gastric sleeve, but if my insurace - Wellcare  - wont pay for it the we will resubmit for bypass. It is a lot to get done now over the next few weeks. I do have a 8year old daughter here who does not want me to have it for fear of loosing me. I am scared of death happening, but at the same time I truely feel this is the only way to help me. I am scared, but I also know if I survive and no complications then wow. what a great change for my life.

Anyways, feedback welcome. As I am nervous, but going through with it.

Thanks,
Julie

____My cousin just talkin to me has about convinced me to just go with the lapband and give it a try instead of more invasive and time on the table. The doc said lapband would be best for someone with heart like mine so it is less complications, less time on table, less invasive. I think i might call him in the morning and talk a little more about it. Seems like ok I can give it a try. Im just iffy about the port being in me. I dont like things in me. I get really paranoid and high anxiety. So. Im thinking take my ativan or zanax and give it a shot??? what are your thoughts out there? is it less preop stuff to do for lapband?

If I were in your shoes, I would definitely take the doctor's opinion into careful consideration. The lapband has been studied longer and has better long term sucess rate. The sleve may stretch over time, and since it is a restriction only procedure with no malbbsorbtion, you may gain some weight back.  At least with the lapband, they may be able to adjust your fills. I believe the lapband would be the safest. Most surgeons are doing it outpatient now, but they woud probably keep you at least overnight.  Many people on the lapband forum have lost a lot of weight and love their bands. Check on there for support

Personally I don't think  your gonna clear "cardiac clearance". You would have to see a cardiologist prior to getting surgery and I would say that your at a very high risk

Do you know what clearance's you need before he will operate? ANd the lapband does sound better option at this point... the surgery may be too much

And is he doing open or laproscopic surger? 3 hrs seems awful long time for bypass.....

I already have Cardiac clearance. It is my cardiologist that has suggested me for this. He is good friends with Dr Lin and feels confident it will go fine. I have already had my stress test, and my last cardiac cath was good. So all looks good on that side. Thanks for your concern though. I think with everyones thoughts I will go for the lapband. I just dont know how I will deal with a "port" in me. But it does seem the quickest and safest. Thanks for your concern.

Let your doctor guide you, the sleeve is the first step of a DS, so it is possible he could get the DS approved as a two step process.  Several of the sleeve-ers did the sleeve as the first step until they could loose enough weight to be healthy enough for the longer surgery.

I am a light weight and had the sleeve procedure, it took 50 minutes.

But like I said listen to your doctor, if you can only get the lap-band so be it.  Anything to help you get your health back.

I'm a patient of Dr. Lin.  I went in wanting the lapband and ended up going for the sleeve which I love. Dr. Lin went over the pros and cons of each surgery and in the end I realized the sleeve was the best option for me.  The maintenance on the lap band would have been too much for me.  Go back and look over all the information you have gotten from them analyze it carefully.

I don't think Emory does the DS.  The choices I was offered were Lap band, Sleeve or RNY.

Good luck with your decision.
