I missed the most important word...EXCESS..so I now know my below info is WRONG...but anything is possible right???
Please help me figure this out....I Just read a post that states weightloss is APPROX 70%(to be successful) I was under the impression that if I lost 30% I was lucky,so If I am 400lbs(hell I am off by 2 lbs) and I loose 70% that is 280 lbs making me 120???? Please help me here, because I don't EVER wanna weight 120lbs. So if I loose 30% I will weight 280lbs and 50% gets me to my goal weight of 200lbs and if I go 55%  can be in onderland and weight 180????? Am I doing this right it sounds to good to be true and it is 3:47am and my brain may not be working well as I am dealing with my Grandfathers stroke so maybe I am way off on the numbers. If I could be 180lbs I am going to have to pray that my head does not get too big b/c I will be fierce...lol... I should also note I am 5'8" with a large frame and I think the ideal weight for me is 167??? and if I loose 41.75% or 42% which gives me 168 I am healthy??? OH My and why am I not doing my preop correctly??? I am following Drs order as of tomorrow and live as pre-op as instructed been making excuses b/c I am still deciding on which surgery but I have 30lbs to loose b4 surgery anyway ,so those bring all the percentages up actually to get to those calculated weights. PLEASE tell me if I am fantasizing about these numbers someone please give me correct numbers if I am wrong
I am going to post this around just to be sure

OK...if you start out at 400 lbs and your height is 5'8 then....

a 30% loss would mean you lose 75 lbs and you would weigh 325

a 50% loss would mean you lose 125 lbs and you would weigh 275

a 70% loss would mean you lose 174 lbs and you would weigh 226

Here is a link to the BMI calculator from OH!  If you want to try it yourself!

Just a note...I started out at 339 and I'm 5'5....At my 3 month follow up I had lost 40% of the weight my doc wants me to lose (The Nuts goal weight said 134...I dont know if  I'll make it that far...but I'd like to get to 150 or so)
Surgery day: 339 lbs (09/29/08)   Current: 168.5 lbs (2/20/10)  GOAL: 160 lbs

Not only am I healthy now...I look better...I feel better.....but, MOST importantly...I, FINALLY, LOVE MYSELF!

Hi, Roxy!

First and foremost, I am so sorry to hear about your grandfather's stroke.  I hope he'll be okay.

As far as the percentage weight loss, here's how I understand it:
Say you weight 400 pounds.  You said your ideal body weight is 167.  Let's round that up to 170 just for an easier calculation.  The 70 percent applies to the EXCESS body weight, meaning 400-170 is 230 pounds EBW (excess body weight).  So 70% of 230 pounds is roughly a 160-pound weight loss, which brings you down to around 240.  BUT keep in mind that everyone is different.  If you lose 80 percent, you'll be around 215....90 percent is roughly 190ish... and 100 percent is around 170 ending weight.

BUT since you plan to lose 30 pounds before surgery:
If you lose the 30 pounds and go into surgery at 370 and your IBW is 170, that's 200 pounds excess body weight.  70 percent of 200 pounds is a 140-pound weight loss, which puts you around 230.  80 percent of 200 pounds is 160 pounds, so that puts you around 210 if you lose 80 percent from your surgery weight.  (And that's just a little above your personal goal of 200!)

I still don't really understand how they come up with IBW (ideal body weight).  I'm just over 5'5", so according to BMI charts I should be between 120 and 150 to be in the "normal" range (between 20 and 25 BMI).  That's a 30-pound difference!  And calculating the percentages using the low number IBW versus the high number can be a huge difference in determining my end weight (20+ pounds!).  My doc uses the high number as my IBW (ideal body weight), but I'd prefer to be more in the middle.  Actually, my personal goal is 144.

I hope this wasn't too confusing!

Edited to add:

Ooh, I like the link that Kelly put up.  I didn't know about that.
They actually calculate your IBW (ideal body weight) for you, which seems to be lower than what both you and I have figured for our IBWs.  If we're using their calculations, that means more weight loss!  I'd like to use their figures, please.
Don't forget to use your surgery date weight when calculating, though, and not your present weight.  (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about that, please.)

I have a family member who had RNY about five years ago.  He lost about 120 or 130 pounds and was feeling great.  I think he was probably at about 100 percent excess weight lost, but I'm not sure.  His face was so sunken in that people told him he was beginning to look sick.  He actually gained back 10-15 pounds so he would look "healthier."   Unfortunately he had to gain some stomach pooch too in order to help his face.  (Too bad we can't pick where we gain/lose first, right?)  But he's still in a very safe range and feels great.  I guess this is just another example of how IBW varies from person to person and not to let the numbers make you nuts.

I can't wait to go on this journey with you, Roxy!  I noticed you said you have a doctor now.  Do you know when you're going to have the surgery?

I'll say an extra prayer for your grandfather and your family.
