Good Morning!

My family and I are looking to relocate to Gwinnett County at the end of July. My question is how is the job market in Georgia?

Several members of our family has told us that the companies they work for have openings, but I really don't want to depend on them.

Be Blessed!

I posted a response to you on the main board.  But just in case...unemployment in GA is at it's highest rate since 1983.

BEWARE!!!!! Do not come to Georgia!!!

I am a case manager at Department of Family and Children Services and am saddened every day by newcomers who were told by their friends and family this would be a great place to relocate. IT IS NOT!!! People are struggling here just like every where else. You may also find the pay is very low here and the cost of living has increased, but the pay scales have not. My 2 sisters, mother, and brother who are all college educated professionals have all been unemployed for about 1 year!!!

I work for the state and even state jobs have been on a hiring freeze since this summer and will continue at a minimum until next June.  Ditto for many county and city jobs.  My sister recently graduated from GA State Univ with a teaching degree and can't find work because even the schools have hiring freezes.

Also with GA's HOPE Scholarship program, you'll find yourself competing with more educated people for jobs. Everybody in metro Atlanta has a degree. So, having that on your resume isn't worth a toot.

Traffic is horrendous here. Public transportation is far and few between. Gwinnett does have a bus line, but it is very limited and won't take you to outskirts like Grayson and Buford for example.

If you don't already have a secured position with a reputable company. stay where you are.  If you insist, plan to at least wait 1-2 years to find work. Have plenty of money saved before you come. don't depend on family and friends becuause even though they won't tell you, they're probably struggling themselves.

I know this may not be what you want to hear, but it is an honest viewpoint from someone who sees first hand what the job market is like.

I really think it depends what field you are in... IF the medical field then it's great, or technology... ok.

My hubby was layed off in July after 11 yrs at his co and found a new job in one month. He got 4 offers and more pay... like I said it depends.

And besides all the traffic and no ocean I think it's a great place to live.

I honestly cant tell you what the job market is like around here....but, I will say....with the economy the way it is...I wouldnt move unless I had a job lined up for when I get here.  I would search for jobs online before I decided to make that move for sure!

Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do!
