Hello everyone.  I just wanted to take a minute, put myself out there and say hello.  I'm Mary-Ann and I'm having Gastric Bypass on the 17th of this month.  I'm currently on day three of my pre-op liquid diet and although day one was AWFUL it's getting easier each day.  I'm trying to imagine what surgery and life after will be like but it's so out of my relm of anything that I'm having a hard time.  So, I just read my handbook and pray for strength.

I'd love to hear about you guys and your experiences so, please, introduce yourselves and any help or advice you could give would be appreciated.

All the best!

Hi Mary-Ann,  Welcome.  My name is Dee and I am really new at the bypass experience.  I had a hard time with my pre-op diet but it does get easier day by day.  The most difficult for me was the fact that I have two adolescent boys to feed and it was not fun cooking for them then drinking my protein shake.... anyway, my RNY was 9/23 and I can say I am glad that part is over with.  I was so scared of the surgery and looking back it wasnt so bad.  Now I am doing my best to push the fluids and try to eat small amounts.  My problem seems to be that my eyes are definitely bigger than my new tummy space.

My experience with this thus far:  be careful not to eat too quickly or to overeat.... its quite uncomfortable and sometimes painful.  Also, I used to love everything ice cold and now I can not tolerate cold anything, it has to be room temp now which seems really weird for me.  On the up side I am down 20 pounds since surgery two weeks ago, which is amazing to me.  Just remember the first few weeks can be difficult to learn your new lifestiyle so try not to get frustrated, I know I am fighting with myself a lot lately on the frustration of what, when and how much to eat or drink.....

Please remember that everyone's experience is different so do what works for you.......

Well hope this helps,
Dee

Thanks so much Dee.  It looks like we may be neighbors too.  :)  I moved from Fort Stewart to Savannah a few months ago.   If you ever get out this way and want to meet up let me know.

Congrats on your current weight loss.  I look forward to hearing more great results from you.  :)

I appreciate the advice and encouragement.

You mentioned moving from FS, did you work on FS or live in housing?  I work on FS myself.

Just let me know when you head this way for support groups and I'll do my best to be there.  Things are really up in the air with my schedule but I should know what life is going to look like for me in the near future by the end of the week.

I lived in housing.  I was staying with a friend while her husband deployed but  I work here in Savannah so I moved this way to be closer to work.  My husband is in the Army but when he gets home from Iraq we will divorcing so I wanted to be out on my own and settled before he got back.

I've been looking for a job on Fort Stewart for the last year.  I don't know if I'm filling out those stupid government applications wrong or what but no such luck.  lol

Thanks again to everyone for your support.  It's been great getting to know people here.

Hi Mary-Ann and welcome to this little corner in cyberspace.

Currently, I'm working on having WLS.  My employer has excluded it from its policy.  I hired an attorney a few weeks ago to fight it and planned on self-paying if I didn't win...then started researching open enrollment (which starts this week) to discover that after the first of the year, they are removing the exclusion from certain policies!  WOO HOO!  So, it will be after the new year when I have my surgery.  If I could figure out how to have surgery January 2nd, I would!  In the meantime, I've lost 56 pounds while working on making some of the lifestyle changes required post-surgery.

Again, Welcome!
Elli

Hi Mary-Ann, and welcome!  OH is the greatest, although this Georgia forum is not as active as the surgery type forums.  I mostly hang out on the VSG forum.  My best advice is to read read read all the posts on OH.  When I went for my surgery, I was totally prepared for all aspects of it because I had spent hours here, reading all the posts.  Best wishes on your surgery!    --Dorothy
