Hi Mashell!  Welcome, neighbor.  I'm in Avondale Estates, but I was born and raised in Decatur.  Anyway, best wishes on your journey.  Which type of surgery are you considering?  And what doctor are you looking at?  I'm just three weeks out from having the vertical sleeve and am doing great.  This is a wonderful website for learning about the whole process!    --Dorothy

I'm really partial to the vertical sleeve gastrectomy ("sleeve" or "VSG").  The surgeon removes about 2/3 of the stomach, so there is less capacity.  There just seems to be way fewer problems with the sleeve than with the band or the RNY.  Check out the VSG forum on this site to read people's experiences.  That's where I hang out most of the time.  Later, new friend!    --Dorothy

Welcome. I'm having RNY on September 9th and I'm so excited to get on the losing side of things and start my new life. I'm looking forward to getting rid yes rid of diabetes and some of my back pain. To be happier and healthier. I'm doing self-pay because my husband's company does not choose to acquire this part of the insurance plan so I'm using some of my retirement money to pay for my surgery. Good luck to you on your journey and we're here if you need us.
