Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy for Morbid Obesity

Treatment:
 
1) Pre-Operative Evaluation:
  a) History and physical exam
  b) Laboratory tests, including CBC, chemistry profile, lipid profile, iron, vitamin B12, and H. pylori antibody tests
  c) Chest x-ray
  d) EKG
  e) Bone density study
  f) Patients who are 60 years of age or older, have a BMI of 60 or greater, or who have significant cardiac or pulmonary issues will also have an echocardiogram and nuclear medicine stress tests
2) Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
3) Follow-up at 3 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and then yearly
 
Eligibility:
1) Patients must meet the NIH standard criteria for bariatric surgery
  a) Patients must be 100 lbs over ideal body weight (as determined by Metropolitan Life Insurance tables) or have a body mass index of 40 or greater
  b) Patients with a body mass index of 35-39 with at least 1 significant health issue related to their obesity are also eligible
2) Patients must be at least 18 years of age
3) Patients cannot have an untreated eating disorder (i.e. bulimia), psychotic illness, or active substance abuse
4) Patients cannot have a serious, life-threatening illness that cannot be stabilized prior to surgery
5) Female patients cannot be pregnant

I called about this clinical trial today.  Dr. Champion has done this surgery twice and the cost is 23,566.  Mexico and Dr. Joya here I come!

Thanks, I was wondering about "clinical trials".  I figured they would offer it at a discount.  That's about the same price (give or take a couple of dollars) that my physician would charge self-pay for the procedure.

Ah well...I guess if they discounted it EVERYONE would want to take part in the clinical trial.

Thanks for finding out how much the procedure cost.  I was emailed today and was given the information regading the seminar on September 3rd.  I guess I want be going now, I can't afford 23,566.
