I recently joined a WLS group on Yahoo and was asked to update my WLS story here.
I had open RNY surgery in August of 2004.
At that time I was 4'11" tall and weighed 297 pounds. I'm still 4'11" tall but I now am 135 pounds lighter. It has truly changed my life for the better.
I had a husband who was disabled and required a lot of care. My knees were shot and I had very little strength or energy, and if I had not had the procedure I wouldn't have been able
to care for either him or myself. I would have been in a wheelchair.
As it turned out I was very able to care for him until he passed away two years ago. Now I am trying to cope with being a widow and living alone.
My surgery was done in Brunswick, Ga by Dr. Henderson at Georgia Coast Surgical and you couldn't  wish for a more concerned physisian or office staff.
I am now at the once  a year visit stage and I have had no bad consequences from the surgery at all.
If anyone is in this part of Georgia and thinking of having the surgery, I can highly recommend Dr Henderson. He is very kind and easygoing and gives you all the time you need at consultations.
If I can be of help feel free to e mail me.
 Sincerely,
 Duane

I am so happy to hear that you had a positive experience with Dr Henderson.  I decided to check out his practice and had my consult last week.  I decided to change over from Angstadt in Savannah to Dr Henderson in Brunswick.  It does make me feel better that someone else can say hes good....  Condolensces on your loss, I do hope all is getting a little easier for you now.

When I met with Dr Henderson he suggested I get the lap band but I am not so sure that is the way to go for me. The nurse said it takes a lot of dedication to watch diet and exercise.  I chose RNY even though Dr H thought the band was better for me..... still thinking on that one.  They submitted to the insurance company and hopefully I will get a decision soon.  I am currently 5ft 3.5in... at 249, BMI 43.4... whats your opinion, is Dr Henderson just being conservative?

Hi Dee,
Thanks for the reply. As to your decision about the lap band or RNY,
I hesitate to give advice , it's such a life altering decision.
I will say that by the time you have gone through the pre surgery evaluation with Dr H. and the physciatric evaluation, you should have more input from them on the proper route to take.
They know their business and won't mislead you. Did you question Dr. H. about the reasons why he says you need the lap band? If not, get him to explain in detail to you. There must be a reason. The nurse is right it does take total comittment to get good results and things may come up that make that a challenge for you.
I'm interested what you finally decide. Let me know how things go.

Thank you for such insight.  Dr H was pushing lap band (in my opinion) because he felt my insurance was more apt to approve the lap band for my situation.  He made a few statements like he thought bcbs didnt cover the bypass anymore, and maybe I should check the coverage with both insurance and his office insurance person...etc... but he didnt say that, he just led me to believe it was an insurance thing.  Well after speaking with the nurse, she brought up some points that I had not thought of, and we submitted for the bypass... I am still questioning my decision which is why I asked about how conservative Dr H tends to be.  Well the decision is made and insurance has said they have the package, I guess I will know sometime in the next 3 weeks.... 2 more to go..... and if they deny the bypass maybe they will approve the lap band.... its in Gods hands and whichever is right for me, will happen.  I have to keep my faith.  Thanks for the info and will keep posting as each step is completed and let me know how things are going in your world....
