Very Strange "Sleep Attacks"!!! HELP NEEDED!!!
Hi Everyone, I'm 3 yrs. & 2 mos. out from wls (GB R-N-Y). I've lost about 130 lbs so far. Having undergone 7 additional surgeries, all unrelated to my gastric bypass surgery, I still have another 50 or so more lbs I want to lose. Although I experienced some minor problems associated with having wls, nothing prepared me for the potentially devastaing symptoms I've been having that have gotten progressively worse over time. The problem: After I eat or drink ANYTHING, I lose consciousness and/or go into a deep, deep sleep for anywhere from 15 min. to 2 or 3 hrs.!!! No one and nothing can wake me up. At first it was just carbs or so I thought. Then it quickly became ANY kind of food or drink. I never minded the "normal" type of dumping - I looked at that as an incentive not to cheat. But the "sleeping" thing is a whole other matter. I've had to plan my entire life around when I'm going to eat because I know that I WILL be "out" once the meal or snack is over. Eating out is all but completely impossible!!! Even drinking a simple protein drink brings the "sleep attacks" on about 90% of the time. I've had several tests - from an endocrinology stand point to neurological studies. I'm going in for my fourth type of sleep study next weekend! So far my doctor's have ruled out many possibilities! We are testing for Narcolepsy next. The last sleep study was inconclusive for Narcolepsy. I just feel like we're all missing something that's right under our noses! My diabetes is completely controlled with diet and exercise. From my own personal experience during one of my surgeries - I know that having the gastric bypass has not "cured" me of diabetes related blood sugar issues. I just don't know how much my wacky blood sugar levels or insulin sensitivity may have to do with this problem overall. The one hundred million dollar question is: Has anyone experienced anything similar to my post-prandial "loss of consciousness" problems or know of anyone who has? I am sooooooooo at my wits end!!! Thanks! Cheryl G.
