Lap Band or Gastric ByPass????
Hi! Dr. Davis is my surgeon as well, don't you just love him? I have been researching lap-band since about this time last year and I thought I was dead set on it until recently. I did not want RNY b/c of the malabsorption issues, but I am afraid I won't lose all the weight I need to with the band. Not to mention the possible complications that can come along with it (i.e slips and erosions). I know there are many people though who have lost all their weight with the band and have not had any problems, but a lot of the revisions I am seeing are band to RNY or band to sleeve. Also coming into play is the fact that my insurance will not cover fills (at $250 each) which was something I did not think to as****il Dr. Davis told me that many don't cover it. So with all that in mind, I have decided on the sleeve. I am lucky in that my insurance will cover it. You may want to just check and see if yours will, it might be worth researching. Let me know if you have any questions or just want to chat!
Thanks so much for writing to me. I am surprised that you are getting the sleeve. Per my conversation with him...he didn't even think my insurance (which I have United Health Care) would cover. He just said most insurances don't cover this. So, I really feel like my only two options are Lap Band or RNY. After doing some more research and all the wonderful people on here posting comments I have decided to go with RNY instead of Lap Band. I didn't get to where I am today by being very disciplined and don't think surgery will change that only I can change that mentally...I feel that with Lap Band I would have to be way more disciplined about getting fills and knowing when to get fills than with the RNY. I feel that the RNY will make me be more disciplined especially when it comes to sugar. I know that I have to make some major changes on my own for either surgery to work. This is a life changing event, but one that I need to save my life.
I would prefer the sleeve because of the fear of all the malabsorption and dumping issues. He just didn't really put that one out there for me because of the insurance.
I am soooo Happy for you that your insurance will cover this!!! When is your surgery?
HA! I wi**** was tomorrow. I have absolutely no patience for things like this. I have not even submitted to my insurance for approval (I did call and give them the billing code to make sure this procedure is covered under my policy though). I went for my psych eval about a month ago and the guy will not return my calls. I have called him 4-5 times and he called back once and told me that he faxed my report to Emory and mailed me a copy. A week and a half later, there is still no sign of any such report in my mailbox or at Emory. So, I am going to go to a different psych. and hopefully get the ball rolling a little faster. I am also still waiting on my PCP to write my letter of medical necessity and my letter of medical clearance and he is dragging his feet. Sometimes I just want to yell at these people and say DON'T YOU SEE YOU ARE PLAYING GAMES WITH MY LIFE??? UGH....so frustrating. I have been overwegiht since I was 10 and I am ready to get rid of it. Anyway, sorry for my rant. I will be sure to post it on my profile AS SOON AS I have my date.
