I had my surgery 4 years ago, so I don't think I could help you with what the going rate for Lapband is..   I did pay mine out of pocket also and actually I believe it was relatively the same price....

I had my surgery with a great surgeon in Phoenix, Arizona....   At that time I lived in Missouri and then moved to Georgia..      Let me say, if I did it over again, I would of not got a surgeon so far away with the lapband.     It is "critical" in the beginning and well, forever that your fills be monitored closely for success....

With that said, I travel 3 hours to get my fills done, I figure that is just a good afternoon drive for me and plus I really trust my current surgeon in Georgia.     He has actually done 2 surgerys on me...   Hietal Hernia/Lapband fix...   and Gallbladder...

Surgeons:  Dr. Blackstone (Arizona), Dr. Ponce (Georgia)
Pre-op weight close to 500lbs
Surgery weight 471
Current weight 232
My new goal 200 in July 2012
Experts goal 185 (Probably never).   Already had my Plastic Surgery, it went great.

Hey there Dirk, I had the same thought about being so far from the surgeon - the biggest reason I stopped considering Mexico etc. Luckily Savannah is only an hour from my house, and my friend in Savannah offered me their guest room if I wanted to stay in Savannah a nite or two after my surgery.   I have gone to Augusta for Dr's appointments at the Medical College of Georgia, and it is a bit more than the three hours you travel, but I can see that the distance would get old fast - especially right after surgery when you need to be seen more often.  But, like you, if I really trusted the doc, I would do it! Thanks for your advice! Patt

Hey there,  My insurance did not cover any WLS.  I had RNY 18 months ago and was private pay.  I paid 25,000 for every expense included. My doctor also does lap-band for 20,300.  (just to give you something to compare to your doc)  My hubby and I took out a home equity loan.  When I realized that I could save my life for the same price I paid for my jeep =)  the decision was effortless.  Good luck to you, I dont think you will regret a dime of the money.  Tracy
