Hi i am currently looking to have weight loss surgery the gastric bypass to be exact. The psychiatrist i am seeing now doesnt think the wls is a good idea she has said no way I have seen devastating things with people who have had WLS. She then offered to prescribe me something to help me lose weight on my own. Geodon . This is a drug for people with schizophrenia and bipolar mania which i have neither but the side affect is supposed to be weight loss it is supposed to be a mood stabilizer and increase your metabolism. Im confused should i stay with a shrink who doesnt like WLS even though im trying to have it. And the reason i need weight loss surgery is to get off of medications not get on more for things i dont have and just to try and lose weight. Should i be worried.

Get a second opinion is my suggestion.

If you lose weight you might become happier and not need your psychiatrist.  Tell her to prescibe herself something for the depression because you are moving on!!  Life is too short for us to keep trying pills and WL plans that work for a few weeks.  There are plenty of supporting doctors who handle WLS patients on a daily basis and they can tell you the ups totally out-way the downs!  Dr. Gary Santavicca is wonderful.

As suggested by the others,  I hope your insurance pays for a second opinion

Dr. Smith was my surgeon too!  You're going to love him!  He will treat you right and will take great care before and after your surgery!  Good luck!! Hugs, Judy

okay Im not a doctor of any sorts but my stepfather is bipolar and was prescribed Geodon by his shrink and gained about hundred pounds in a year ......he went to see his PCP about the weight gain and he told him it was the geodon and started to wing him off of it , because meds like that you just cant come off of.  so far he has lost about 30 pounds and he has alot more energy ....So i agree everyone else and GET A SECOND OPINION !!!!!!!
