Hi! I have been researching this surgery for 5 years. Last year I had already done the psych. eval. and seen the nut. and was trying to get auth. from my insurance for the surgery when my husband was promoted and we had to move to Macon. So here I am with new insurance, which will cover the surgery(so they say...LOL), but I have no idea what surgeon to see. I am willing to travel some. I just need to know who you guys suggest.TIA for your help. Rhonda

Rhonda, if insurance coverage is a primary factor in your decision, I would suggest that you contact your insurer and get a list of approved doctors and approved procedures that they will cover.

If your insurance only covers one procedure, and you’re comfortable with that procedure, then that decision is made. If your insurance will cover several different procedures I would suggest that you really take time to see how you abuse food and look at how the different procedures work so that you can choose one that will really help you the most.

After that maybe make of list of things and put them in the order of their importance to you. Like for me; having mine done lap was at the very top. If something would have happened and I would have had to have been opened during the procedure, I was okay with that, but I would never have gone in planning to have it open. On the other hand, I have a girl friend that refused to have a lap procedure, she wanted to be open all the way! Some folks want a practice/doctor that is right around the corner in case of an emergency, some might want a younger doctor that will be around to follow them for the rest of their lives, some might want a practice that only deals in bariatric surgery, the list can go on and on. After you have your list, then start looking for a practice/doctor that lives up to what you need.

We are very fortunate to have some of the best doctors in the country in this area so you shouldn’t have any problems finding one that will suit you just fine.

Best of luck in your journey!

Becky

You didn't mention for which surgery type...for RNY I've heard good things about Dr. Duncan...for DS it would be Dr. Smith or Dr. Maynard.  Not familar with the lapband...so can't help on that one.
