COMPLETE Newbie.....

Hey ya'll! I am a complete newbie. I went to my INITIAL group meeting earlier this month. My first Dr's appt with the surgeon for the initial consult is in September. I have researched WLS since Carnie Wilson had hers done.  I was referred to this site by someone on curvychick. She had WLS and told me to come here that it would be helpful and hopefully make me feel more comfortable.

I made my profile and was looking around and made the mistake of seeing the "memorial" tab so I clicked it. Yep, instantly scared the holy hannah outta myself. Bad idea. I think the other thing that scares me is that my husband will be deployed when I have my surgery, so just me. Bleh.

I'm looking to meet/talk with some people that could possibly take a newbie under their wing, when needed. LOL

Congratulations to all of you on your weight loss so far. I've seen some of the Before/After pics and wow!

Have a beautiful day and great week!

Hi Nacole,

Welcome to the greatest journey of your new life.  I had my surgery just a little over four months ago so I know what you are going through.  You have come to the right place.  I can tell you one thing about the memorial page, which I too spent a lot of time on.  If you were to look closely you would see that several of those people either hadn't had surgery yet or their cause of death was not surgery related, posibly obesity related but not surgery related.  Not all of them mine you, but most.   I see you are in the Savannah area,  there is a large support group in your area.  Hopefully one of the people will see your post and tell you about it.  If no one does I will find the person for you.   Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress.  There is a big to do in Brunswick in October so maybe we will all meet then.

Thank you SO much for the responses. I appreciate them greatly. Yes, I live close to Savannah. I'm actually about 40-45 mins away from there. My husband n I moved here last fall and bought a home due to the lack of renting options around here.

I was actually kinda scared to post cause I'm so use to being treated poorly because OF my weight even though this board is to help. I was still leery. lol I know how that sounds but use to being treated so "bleh" by people.

I will keep ya'll updated on the progress. :-)  Thank you to ya'll yet again!!

I can tell you something about this group of people.  There has never been a time in my life I felt more comfortable with my own body as when I am in the presence of anyone from here, be that online or in person.  You will find yourself very welcome.  There is a one day seminar on September 8th just north of Atlanta.  You chould consider coming.  There will be a lot of information available along with a whole lot of support people.

Ive not had my surgery yet and I did the same thing you did. Someone told me about this site, I joined and the first thing I did was went to the memorial site go figure. I was scared to death and I even cried.  I also posted to the main board my fears and they comforted me.  The way I look at it there are memorials for all types of surgeries and if you noticed not all the memorials are from having WLS.  Im still afraid of the unknown and aren't we all? But Im ready to move on with my surgery Im having surgery this month on the 29th.   None of us should ever ignore the "Memorials", but we shouldn't fear them either. Just do your homework, know the do's and the don'ts, know how to handle certain situations that you may encounter. I used the memorials and the regrets board to help me to understand different complications and how I might could prevent them or how I might could treat them. Also the lessons Ive learned is how to describe symptons to those that doesn't know much about WLS.  Also what questions I needed to ask my surgeon. So use all of the negatives to make a positive, that is what I did. I wish you all the luck on your journey and will pray that you will find peace in your decision as I have. Hugs
