Insurance coverage???
This is my first time online and not really sure how it works. Here goes... I am desperate for the wls but I have United Healthcare insurance that excludes coverage for any reason. I have researched this procedure thoroughly and believe this is my only way to happiness. I'm 5'3" and weigh 250 #. I suffer from all kind of ailments and am only 35, I have 3 children that need their "mama" back. I truly need any ideas of insurance companies that cover this surgery or any ideas about how to get approved. PLEASE help!!!
I am pretty new to this too. I have been doing my research for several months now.As far as I know it is not the insurance company it is the policy that the employer chooses to purchase. For example I could have UHC and it may be covered for me becuase of the policy my employer has. The employer you have has choosen not to cover wls in the policy. I have heard of people appealing a denial based on the exclusion. Although it is rare from what I know that it is overturned. I have also seen people on here say that they contacted their HR department and inquired about adding a "rider" to the policy. But basically it is all about the employer's policy. I hope I haven't confusd you
. If I'm missing information OH family please add a bit
. Be strong and don't give up I am in the same boat as far as my height and weight. Actually I am at 267. I have to do a 6 month supervised diet b4 my insurance will even consider me for wls. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Everyone her is VERY NICE and helpful. You may also want to try the insurance board there are some success stories with people that had exclusions and are going through the same thing..

Good morning! Thanks so much for your reply. I'm a school nurse but have decided to quit work at the end of this year to go back to school full time to further my education. I will then have to buy private insurance. I have tried to research insurances that seem to cover this procedure and so far BCBS Anthem seems to be a good idea. I am waiting for quotes now. I would never in my life dream that I would be considering this kind of surgery b/c I never had a problem with my weight until 1999 when I had my 2nd child. Now I struggle everyday. I am so tired of not wanting to go anywhere or do anything. My kids are 16, 7, and 2 and they get aggravated about not being an active family anymore but I physically cannot do it. I could never afford to self pay for this procedure so I have GOT to find a way. Any advice, info, etc that you or anyone else has will be greatly appreciated. Keep me informed about your situation and progress. I am surprised but really like being able to talk openly to others in my situation, all my friends are very thin. Thanks for everything. I hope to hear from you soon. Amy
Please be careful when considering private health insurance...I am 54 have BCBS PPO of GA (individual policy) with a $1500 annual deductible, and they would not cover my RNY surgery. The policy now runs $500/month for me and me alone!!! You may have to look long and hard for private insurance to cover you, and then if and when you do find a policy, there could be an exclusion time period.

No problem we are all here to help each other.I agree with the other posters as well. Make sure the policy will cover the wls. I know the may have something in the policy that says u can't treat for a prexisting condition for a certain period of time. I have sen people say about a year. Also checking with your HR is good advise too. HAVE A GREAT DAY!
I agree DS I had United Health care as my insurer the qualification for my policy was your BMI had to at least 40 suffer with obesity for at least 5 years. And be at least 18, that’s all. Any plans that has an exclusions is because your employer did not choose to cover WLS. You might want to pursue it by contacting your Human Resources department Kay
