My hubby and I need a break and have decided to visit the FINE STATE OF GEORGIA!!!   We were actually planning a trip down last fall and was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks before....so after months of chemo, radiation and surgeries.....we were approved to go!!!!  YAYYYYY We are actually flying into Atlanta and driving to Savannah.  I was wondering if some of you could share a thought or two on your favorite or unique places between the two cities!  We both LOVE the civil war and history.  Any ideas would be great!!

Thanks in advance~Your northern friend, Ronda

Hey, Rhonda... I'm not like some, I won't hold it against you that you are not a Southerner.   Atlanta and Savannah, huh?   You can find something to do on every corner in the ATL, so I'll not bother with that.  As far as Savannah goes, follow the road signs into down town Savannah--everything is well marked, so you can't get lost.  The only thing to remember is that there are all one way streets in that area.   I would suggest that you try to get in on one of the ghost rides or tour the Johnny Mercer house.  The house that is the backdrop for the book/movie Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil, is in the area of the Mercer house.  If you guys like to walk you'll love the shops down on the river, which is  just a few blocks over from the "square".  The kids at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) have some really cool shops around the area as well.  Try the Pirates House for a fun casual lunch.  Also, chef Paula Dean has a spot there as well.  It's my understanding that they don't take reservations, however, so the wait in line may be a long one.   Congrats on beating the cancer.   Enjoy your vacation. Ingrid PS.  Next time you come down you should come visit Augusta.  We're a cool little place as well.

Welcome...After you visit Savannah, if you have time, drive to Tybee Island and visit Fort Pulaski.  The island is very nice and quiet...you can walk on the beach or fish off the pier...very relaxing.  It is about 30 minutes south of Savannah...just follow the signs for Tybee Beach. You must go to Lady and Son's....it is a lot of food, but it is Paula Deen's restaurant...very good.  Oh, and if you can take a history or ghost tour in Savannah do that.  :)  I LOVE Savannah.  It is a very cool city. Have fun and be safe.

Hi Ronda, A carriage ride would be a fun, romantic way to tour the city too.  You can catch any of the trolley tours over near the visitors center on MLK, Jr. blvd. or at City Market.  Another nice place for lunch similiar to Lady and Son's and just as popular for locals is Mrs Wilkes - off of Whitaker and you must get it line by 11:30 or lunch will be sold out.  Not open for dinner.  Broughton St is the main shopping drag through downtown with lots of quaint shops.  If you are already downtown, Tybee is only about 30 minutes away and Fort Pulaski is on the way.  Lots of forts and cool areas between the two.  There is another visitor center on River Street if you miss the one on MLK for lots of brochures, coupons, and visitor information. Savannah is a walking city for sure so bring your walking shoes and enjoy.  Oh, Bonaventure Cemetary would be a good tour for you since you like history.  Also, want to fit in Forsyth park.  You'll be able to rest, enjoy the history and watch lots of people there. If you are after mall shopping, southside Savannah has two malls, both on Abercorn St.  Lots of chain restaurants on that drag as well.  I love living in Savannah and I never get to fit in all the great things there are to do around town.  Enjoy!

If you want to take in some more history about Oglethorpe then head on down I95 to Brunswick and the Golden Isles. Full of history and sister to Savannah. St Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island and Brunswick make up some of the Golden Isles. Jekyll Island is where they have the millionaires village, Sea Turtle rescue, several tours including the slave ship The Wanderer tour. Lots of golf courses on all islands. St Simons has Fort Frederica and Christ Church with lots of history there. If you get a chance to read some of the Eugenia Price books they will be great for you to connect this area and Savannah. Andersonville Nation Historic Site,  Fort Pulaski Tybee Island Cumberland Island national site in St. Mary Ft. I hope this helps you out. Alicia
