Help! Need camping/trail riding food ideas!

OK I am almost 7 months post op and I am really getting into the whole exercise thing.  I am about to start competing with my horse at rides where we will be camping for the whole weekend.  These are rides that are around 20 miles each day so I will need to think of high protein items I can pack in my saddlebags that do not need to be refrigerated.  I would love to try a protein bar but they all seem to have so many calories and I CAN NOT tolerate artificial sweeteners of any kind.  They all make me very, very sick and unable to do anything except sit on the toilet all day! At home I have been eating a lot of ham & cheese & scrambled eggs for breakfast, then tuna or chicken salad spread on one slice of sugar free bread for lunch, and for dinner I have been preparing dishes with chicken or shrimp in them, like chicken with veggies and pasta, shrimp stir fry (no oil - just PAM), etc.   On the trail I am thinking I can pack string cheese, maybe some peanuts?  I can bring a cooler so I can keep the cheese cool for at least a day or so - just can't keep it that way once it goes in my saddlebags. OK now at these rides sometimes some people grill out for dinner but not always.  What can I pack for meals when I am at the campsite?  Meals and snacks. I just need some good ideas of high protein, low sugar, low calorie "picnic" foods that will be easy for me to reach into my saddlebags and eat on the go.  The less I have to worry about food the better things will be for me. Any ideas are appreciated! Sarah 314 pre-op, now 213 and still losing!

Beef Jerky. I don't think Clif Bars have artificial sweeteners in them...I use them to fuel for bike rides over 30 ,miles...if you eat half of one it's apprx 120-125 calories...you will need some carbs for energy...esp. if you are doing this all weekend long.

Thanks so much Sherry.  I will look at Clif bars next time I am at the store.  Are there any flavors you like more than others or that have lower sugar than others? Beef jerky is a great idea - I just have to remember to chew really, really well! Thanks! Sarah

Cliff bars have a 4 to 1 carb to protein ratio, which is what athletes look for. As for flavors, there are a TON of them...I like most of them, it's just a personal choice of what you like. If you are unsure of them, I would try it before you went on a weekend trip.
