Help, Protein Diet
Ok, I went to the seminar for Dr Duncan's office. I spoke to Dr Rashid and she suggested that I increase my protein to help get rid of some weight, and to shrink the size of my kidney. Pat told me the same thing not too long ago. Here is where I am confused. supposedly, from reading, Protein increases muscle, and can be bad for your heart in high levels.
Can anyone assist me in what I need to do??? Do I take protein suppl.? I want to show that I am trying to abide and make sacrifices.
Thanks!

Ok, bottom line is that Post-Op you HAVE to get all the protein you can so I would definately go ahead and get started on that and get use to it. Remember though that after surgery your tastes change ALOT. The best protein powder I have tried is Unjury. It is much smoother than the others IMHO. Also I would say that if you aren't in the habit of taking a daily multi-vitamin that you start that as well. Go ahead and get in an exercise routine too if you can.
Good luck on your surgery!!

Hello Nicole,
You can start trying protien suppl. but like Sheeri said your taste will change some after your surgery. My doctor wanted me doing Atkins shakes I was able to only do them before surgery then after my surgery they really tasted really bad. But I still drink 3 a week though because I feel sometime that I'm not getting all that I should. But you will need to listen to your doctor and do what they say. Keep me posted about your journey
Best wishes and Hug's

I agree - listen to your Dr... And everyone is right- you have to get the protein in after surgery and it will help with your weight loss if you use it as a meal replacement. At a support meeting in Tucker a girl gave me great advice - try the vanilla protien powder - then you add what you like (ie, 1/2 banana, 4-6 strawberries, hand full of blue berries,ect.. a little artificial sweetner, they have excellent sugar free syrups - choc and strawberry at Walmart.) You can do 4 oz of skim milk and 4 oz water with any of the above for flavor with the vanilla powder, then about 18-20 ice cubes and get a great shake. I have even in a pinch added sugarfree popcicles for the falvoring if I am out of other choices. I use Isopure because my surgeon recommended it due to the high amount of protein per scoop (25 protein per scoop and you use 2 scoops for one shake - only 210 calores and 50 proteins) You can also spilt this and do 2 smaller shakes a day too. Everyone surgeons have a littel different protocol. My surgeons nurse set me up on 71 grams of protein a day so the isopure works well for me. There is also an Isopure fruit drink I get at my local vitamin store, many flavors - they are best very very cold. 160 calories and 40 proteins. As everyone mentioned your tastes will change so before surgery don't get bulk or you may be sorry- most of the proteins have single or small serving pkgs. A good rule of thumb is more protein and less calories the better the protein product as far as bang for the buck so to speak.
There are many many choices - do a search online there are some of the different websites (vitalady) used to do a sample pkg....
Good luck - you can do it!!! Lots of water helps too - at least 64 oz a day - and walk - walk - walk!!
Take care,
