meaning of term: passing the envelope

Not a weight loss question. However I hope someone can help me with this. What is the meaning of the term: passing the envelope? I heard this term used on the news a couple of times and I don't know the meaning. I tried to research this on line. Anyone out there know the meaning of this term? Thank you. Molly

Hi Molly, Doesn't it mean the same as "passing the torch"? Something like that I think, handing something over to someone. Possibly a job or a position, or maybe some sort of responsibility. Well that is my two cents worth. Good luck finding a more educated definition! Candy
