I am new to the forum and am leaning towards the lap-band. What are some of the reasons members have picked the lap-band instead of the other surgeries????

Even thou lap-band is great it does not have as good as results on women as male patients. Dr. Duncan is trying to find out why men have greater weight loss with lap-banding than female patients. The reasons people go to the band is you do not have to take vitamins for the rest of your life, because some of the intestine is removed with RYN. And the recovery rate is less time. Even thou I had no trouble with my RYN some paitents do have some complications. But even with banding there are risks, the band can slip, or cause a blockage. But do your research on both. Dr. Duncan at Peachtree Surgical is the best, he is number 2 in the world for RYN and his office also does lap-banding. And he will tell you the surgeries are not the magic bullet, and you have to be dedicated to the task of losing weight and learning proper eating habits and exersizing too. Hope this helped a little, good luck on your journey. Hugs, Lynda

I am sorry to report that he is not number two in the world. Where are you getting your information because if people would check out the court house records you will see that he is not number two in the world. Crece Hare

Hi, I had lap-band surgery in Sept and have lost 53 lbs. I chose this surgery because I wanted an effective weight loss tool without having to have my insides re-routed...just a personal choice. Other reasons...fewer complications, faster recovery time, my band can be adjusted forever..so there is no window of optimal weight loss. I don't have the absorption issues with iron and other nutrients that gastric bypass patients have, I am able to eat any food I want without getting sick, I just want much less of it now and there is no dumping syndrome. Your weight loss is somewhat slower with the band, but for me thats one thing I like about it. It's not such a drastic change that my body can't keep up with. 50 lbs within 6 months, I've been happy with. I did my homework and found that the long term (3-5 yrs) results of weight loss were the same. I would encourage you to ask the same question on the lap-band forum. You will find a wealth of info there! http://obesityhelp.com/forums/LapBand/a,messageboard/board_id,5359/ As for men loosing faster, I think thats pretty normal whether through regular dieting or with WLS. Just like gastric bypass, the band is a tool to assist you along the way. Good luck with your decision! I think both surgeries are effective as long as you understand they are tools, not magic pills. Can ya tell I love my band?

Make sure you ask this question on the RNY board as well so you can get their opinions... But in the end, you have to do what you feel is right. I think your surgeon will be able to help you make the decision as well when you go for a consultation!

well here is my two cents ...I had RNY and it went bad....the surgon would not fix it ...So i got a lap band to help me out ...I went for it since i did not want something that was not going to cut me all up agian .....The weight loss is slower but in teh end both surgerys are provin to have the same effective weight loss. that is in the end ....with the lap band you will lose ( once you have restriction) about 1-2 pounds a week. Now it can take some time to get restriction for me it took three fills ....so that was about 4 months ...Granted i did lose during that time ....some people lose right away ...Lap band is not something that the weight is going to fall off you like it will with RNY ...What you need to decide is do you want then to re rout your insides or not ...that is the bottom line ...and can you deal with slow weight loss .....I recamend both surgerys but you have to pick what one you are most comfertable with ......
