I decided I wanted to have the gastric banding procedure. I have gotten all of my approvals for the surgery except my psychological evaluation. My Psychologist feels I lack some of the tools needed to support myself through the journey of having this surgery performed. He feels one of the tools I lack is the emotional support that I would gain by having a network of people that support me and understand what I will be going through.. Can anyone help me by describing any emotional feelings I might experience after having the gastric banding procedure performed? How would a larger support network benefit me? I currently live in Georgia alone. I have no family here. I am very close to my co-workers and I have 2 folks a consider true friends but there is not anyone I can go to at this point that can relate to my situation or the current milestone of failing the psychological evaluation. I would most appreciate anyone that could share with me and help me build the support network I so desparately need.

You might try visiting ths support groups for your doctor or the hospital where your surgery is to be performed.

The only supports group they have are for those people who have had the surgery, there is nothing before to prepare you for the emotional approach to the surgery. The doctor thought the chat rooms would be the best option to fit my life style.

You may be right, but there are several around Atlanta that are for pre and post patients.

Also thought you might try a church, Sunday School class, etc. You might be able to make a few friends that could give you general support.

There are 3 support groups sponsored by Wellstar hospitals that welcome pre-ops and post-ops. You can email me for directions and more information. I go to 2 of them and, as of the 13th, am a post-op!! 2nd Tuesday each month is at the Diabetes Center at Wellstar Kennestone hospital near downtown Marietta at 6:30. 2nd Saturday each month is in the Auditorium of the Wellstar Cobb Hospital on Austell at the East-West Connector in Austell at 9am. 3rd Thursday each month is at the Development Center across the street from Wellstar Windy Hill hospital off of Windy Hill near I-75 at 6:30pm. Support groups are FANTASTIC!! If it wasn't for the folks I met through them, I would not have gotten a ride to the hospital, someone to wait in the waiting room (apparently a requirement of Wellstar Kennestone hospital), visitors, and a ride home from the hospital. I definitely understand doing this alone. The folks you meet at these support groups and the local OH get togethers can be godsends. From them you can learn what to expect afterwards, how to handle getting your liquids and protein in, what vitamins work well, how to deal with the new attention you'll receive as you lose weight, etc. A support group (or two or three) is VERY important to your success. Folks that have traveled the WLS road before you are invaluable!! Sue
