PRAYERS NEEDED
I haven't been on the site lately due to things going on here. Please pray for our 7 year old daughter (Presleigh) as we just found out that she has CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder) and Receptive-Expressive Language Disorder.
We have a lot on our plate as with the CAPD, she doesn't always know what we are saying, but sometimes hears something similiar (i.e. she hears words that are similar as in such for much, taste for waste, etc.) Also with this is coming Tolerence Fading Memory, meaning that she comprehends NOTHING, and offcourse the recepetive-expressive language disorder is a language disability which causes impairment of both the understanding and the expression of language, which I believe falls hand in hand with CAPD.
I have had to simi fight the school to get her the help she needs because she has passing grades, but what they didn't/don't understand is that even though she is passing without the needed help she will eventually fail, so I went to the school board and now they are going to try everything needed to help her, like locate a FM System (a mic for the teacher, and headset for her) that takes out the backround noise, because if there is background noise she can't hear what's being said, Also they are going to start a program called earobics.
Now this is a life long disabilty, that doesn't go away but can get better as she gets the help she needs. Here at home we are having to learn different ways to parent, like cut off the t.v., radio etc. when we need to speak to her, or take her to another room to make sure she hears us, along with getting her to look eye to eye with us to know she hears what's being said and get her to repeat what's been said. All this time in the past that I've gotten frustrated with her because I thought she was ignoring me, wasn't the case at all, she couldn't hear me. Everyday we are taking one step at a time, some days are better than others but we are dealing with it. On top of all this she has ADHD and at age 4 had and ASD (Atriel Septal Defect) that was repaired 6/04.
PLEASE PRAY FOR US.
Fight the good fight! Do you have a list of your parental rights? You should have been given one at the SST meeting.
My sister was special ed, and my mom had to fight HARD to get her placed in the most appropriate place. Unfortunately, it took a great toll on her and gave her a nervous breakdown-it was BAD.
So-if you need a little extra support or someone to talk to, please get a therapist. Always helps.
Also-if you can find journal articles online, or have your dr write some notes, or provide you with literature, that will certainly help your daughter's situation.
Where I teach (title 1 school) we have so many UNINVOLVED parents. You are certainly your daughter's hero!
