Getting ready for lap-band
I called my insurance provider. ANY gastric surgery is excluded from insurance. A little about my problem: To be a big guy I am very active. I had been working out and was about 290. I have a hypo-thyroid disease where I have to take medicine the rest of my life. Last year about this time my Doctor's nurse screwed up my prescription and within 6 months I had gained 70 pounds and slowed down to almost a halt. I had also gained water weight, around my ankles, very high blood pressure, and pain in my joints with all the added weight.
My Doctor has had little success with medication for blood pressue - the medicine causes additional water retention. I am prepared to pay out of pocket, but don't like it. I am not near as active as I should be and don't like all the health problems.
Mind wise I am active in the community and extroverted - get along with everybody.
Thanks for your interest. By the way, you look pretty good.
Hi Jon, I was banded on Sept 12th and have lost a total of 39 lbs so far. I have been tremendously happy with my decision. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.
If you have any questions or want to talk email me. I'll be glad to share my experience with you.
There is a lapband forum here that is very helpful as well.

Good Luck!
Jon,
The long terms stats for the Lap Band are just as high as the gastric bypass. I will say that those I've talked with who have the band say to them it's a little harder than they thought it might be. It does really take some food choice adjustments, however to maintain with the RNY it does too. So I'd say it's overall pretty even. You have to go with something that's going to work with your lifestyle and how you feel your eating issues lay. Good luck! There are many successful people with the band.

Hi Jon,
I got my band back in early May. I've lost a total of 77 lbs, 47 since I got the band. I love it. It takes making changes in your lifestyle, just as any WLS will. WLS is not a majic pill that lets you continue to eat the wrong foods and still lose weight. My band has been a tool to remind me that I'm done. Enough. It took me 10 years to put this weight on, so if it takes me 2 or 3 to take it all off, that's ok. I'm already feeling so much better. No GERD, no more knee pains, less back pain, good blood pressure, I have energy and never get tired out the way I used to.
Email me if you have any more questions or I'd be glad to refer you to my doc. I don't know what he charges, but you could give them a call.
