Had My Revision Consultation Today!!!
Hi Everyone,
I am in the great State of Ohio- we drove here yesterday for the Holiday. I am so excited that I had to share this. I had my consultation with Dr. Maguire today, and I was extremely nervous. I found out today that the only obsticle for the revision is simply a matter of getting insurance approval.
He sat and talked to Craig and I for 30 mins, which I found incredible considering his office was PACKED!! His first concern was more for why there was no one in Georgia who could do the revision process? After we talked it through,he said that he assumed it was due to malpractice insurance issues. His second concern was, that there are very rare cases where people who have this process cannot maintain their protein levels, and become very sick from not ingesting enough protein. This is something that has to be monitored closely, and he wanted to make sure I would have adequate supervision upon returning back to Georgia. He advised that if I should do this, then he would consult with my General practitioner as well as my local surgeon for additional care/follow-up issues.
He told us that the results of this revision surgery is really crude- Meaning there were no true statistical comparisons. You could lose 30lbs or 150 lbs- It just depends on your genetic makeup as well as how the malabsorption works for you.I also found, that with this revision process- your pouch stays in place...The difference is that they re-route your intestines which make the inability to absorb food harder.
The only things I have to do for preperation is to have my existing Psych exam results sent to him, and to commit to being in Ohio for a min of three weeks. The rest is dependent upon the insurance approval and the date for the revision surgery.
So...now that I am relieved to hear that, I can try and focus on dates to move forward- Craig just submitted his paperworkfor his bypass- and my daughter Kelli has another surgery on 1/2/07- I will try to fit this in around their prcedures as well as my schedule....but if approved it will be done no later then April so I can move forward.
Anyway- I wanted to Thank EVERYONE for their prayers as well as let everyone know how excited I am, and will keep you posted as we move forward.
Have a wonderful Holiday!
Denise

Hi Amy,
I just got back today- beating that traffic nightmare on tomorrow-and am going through my email.
There are only two Doctors in the State of GA who can do a DS procedure. Dr. Dennis Smith in Kennesaw, and Dr. Donald Maynard in Conyers. Neither will do a revision. What I did not know is that it is not really a "revision" what this procedure will do is re-route the small intestine to enable less absorption of food. I will be checking with Dr. Steinberg on Monday to see if this is something he can do here locally? Dr. Maguire suggested I do this first, and if not then back to Dayton Ohio I go.
I was intially recommended to someone in DC- but there was no way I would do that and so, I found someone who pioneered this technique and in fact resides in my hometown.
As for the "revision"- there are two positives.
1. There will be some additional weight loss regardless on the amount
2. The inability to absorb additional calories will aid in keeping that weight loss permanent.
I am glad to know there are some options for me, and ready to take them on. It is not even a hard choice for me, I knew upfront what my decision would be if he said I was a prime candidate. I have had issues from day one, and am hellbent in succeeding one way ot another!
Thanks for the well wishes!
I actually spoke he

Dr Lin at Emory does revisions. I know 2 people that have had this procedure done with him. One was a vbg revised to a ds and the other was an rny revised to a ds.
Neither one has re lost any substantial weight and the rnyer has had even more severe problems with hypoglycemia since the revision.
Also the procedure of going through the Emory program is quite frustrating.
