I'm not doing well.
Today has been one month since surgery... and I'm down 19 lbs... 41 pounds total since starting the pre-op liquid diet. I am 222 today!
But, I have to tell you, my good mood and happiness is fading because I am starting to feel like total crap. The first three weeks were fantastic. No pain, no vomiting, no problem eating... nothing. Now I am having a hard time keeping food down. I can barely get food in now... and I'm throwing about once a day. Friday I had three cherries that made me throw up for 7 ½ hours. Last weekend some peaches took me out.
Yesterday I started having acid coming up in my mouth. I have no idea why I'm having acid problems all of a sudden. I am not overeating... I get about 800-900 calories a day. Thanks to the liquid protein I *AM* getting my protein in, but I'm even starting to have a hard time swallowing liquid.
I have an appointment this week (one month post op appt), so I am anxious to see what they have to say. Dear God I hope I don't have a stricture. Any ideas for me?
BUT, I have to admit... I'm looking good! I HAVE A WAIST!!!!!!!!!
Oh - I know there will be some comments about my food choices... my surgeon said I can have 1 1/2 ounces of protein w/ 1 1/2 ounces of fruit or veggie 4 times a day. I can't even get down an ounce. meat is almost impossible to digest and fruit makes me dump. I'm living on cottage cheese, cheddar cheese (which, surprisingly, doesn't give me trouble), and sugar-free yogurt. HELP!
Hi Carol,
Congratulations on your weight loss!
I am glad you are going to see your doctor. It sounds to me like your pouch is swollen and irritated (like mine
) Which could be the start of a stricture. I'm not a medical professional, I just play one on the internet
This is just what I have experienced to work for me.
At 4 weeks I was still on pureed foods. Skin of fruit is really, really hard to digest. For now, I would stay away from any fruit skins. Also if you do eat fruit make sure it is no sugar added. Fresh or frozen or baby food fruit at this stage is best, if you can handle the sugars. This early out what you can and can't eat will change daily so don't give up all hope on fruit
My list for 5-9 weeks says unsweetened applesauce, pears peaches, ripe bananas, apricots and the dreaded cherries (sorry). All no sugar added.
Veggies might be a wiser choice for now, green beans, peas, carrots, squash, or beets. Well cooked and mashed or pureed.
I have also read that fruit is a no no except for 2 days a week when you are trying to lose weoght (nothing to do with weight loss surgery, advice is for non ops too). When we consume sugar (fruit) our body makes more insulin, insulin tells our cells hang on to that fat and burn this sugar for energy.
Have you tried string cheese? Fish or shrimp? That has been a staple in my diet. How about eggs? (didn't work for me but it is on the list) And milk is a great source of protein if you can handle it. I also found pretzels, well chewed sat well on my pouch early out even though it is a carb, I had to have something in my tummy and it made some of the nausea go away. And canned chicken sits way better than fresh chicken.
Early out, food choices are so limited and easy to want to move faster than we should. Just try and remember one day at a time. It is terrific that you are getting in your protein supplement though, I still have a hard time with that at 1 year out.
I would try really hard to be extra gentle with your pouch until you see your doctor though. Runny mashed potatoes, mashed green beans, yogurt, cottage cheese. SF Carnation instant breakfast worked for me too. And soup, veggie soup, minnestrone.
I wish you the very best!! I look forward to watching your progress!

Carol,
I hope your Dr is able to help you with the reflux! I've had that happen a time or two.
Please keep us posted.
I do want to tell you that I am almost two years out and some times have problems with fruit....at least here lately I am. I think it may be the skin. I ate a peach and some cherries yesterday and am having a hard time eating any thing today. Pineapple is a no-no for me a James both. All of a sudden it just starting giving us a hard time.
Hugs to you and please keep us posted.
