Steve-
While it is true one needs to have a supportive PCP, traveling for surgery is not as bad as you make it sound. Just ask just about anyone on the DS forum, as most of us had to travel for surgery. Both me and my DH went to Omaha Nebraska for surgery. Our surgeon has worked with our local docs. When my DH needed to have his J-tube removed we had no problem getting a local general surgeon to do this. And to bring up the fact that a general surgeon did not make money on the original surgery is down right insulting and disrespectful. Certainly depending on the issue there may be problems but using your frame work there would be issues if the surgeon were on vacation, ill, retired or deceased. The argument just doesn't wash. Yes, particularly since there are so few DS surgeons (there are RNY and band surgeons on every other block) something specific to the DS might need the attention of my surgeon. But as a rule, most issues can be addressed by local docs.

But traveling to have DS surgery is really not so bad. It is so worth it.
RedDr. Kim said he stopped doing the DS, coz people were not following their post op instructions.
LMAO, like people follow instructions with post op RNY with no exceptions.
I got the feeling he just does not want to do them anymore.
I am supposed to get an RNY with him, he has a GREAT reputation. I did not even know about the DS, till i went to his seminar, now i am having second thoughts as to which surgery to get..
I think i'll pray to the Baby Jesus for guidance.

Yes, it is something. Dr. Kim at Celebration used to do the DS but stopped several years ago. I have never really known the reason he stopped. We had Dr. Gagner in Miami last year. He is really quite famous and moved his practice from NYC to Miami, but he only stayed about a year. He has spent probably the last year or so traveling the world doing the DS. Last I heard he was going to set up shop in Montreal this summer. But traveling to have DS surgery is really not so bad. It is so worth it.

Teresara, to the best of my knowledge, no surgeon in the entire state of Florida does the DS any more. Dr. Barry Haiken in Largo was one of the last before he retired five years ago.

Terry, definitely change doctors if you are not comfortable with the one you have, but when you are looking for one, make sure that they not only listen to ou but also that you listen to them. Although your doctor sounds like an ass, he did make some very good points about going out of state for this surgery. Your new POCP would be able to follow up with you about blood work and such, but that would be about it. You will have a hard time finding a surgeon who wants to take on the responsibilities, of another surgeon's patients; they didn't make any money on your original surgery, they don't want to take on the risk of treating any complications. You may be required to fly back to your original surgeon for any problem, big or small. Yes, a hospital will treat yoru emergent needs, and keep you from dying, but anything less and you could have big problems. Once you find a PCP you liek and you discuss all of this with them, then find a bariatric surgeon who will agree to see you for followup, and complications, before you go out of state for surgery.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Topic: Less than two weeks away
That's right folks, one week from Saturday will be the first meeting of the Bay Area Weight loss surgery Support Group. We are so excited about this. The first meeting will be at from 10:00am till noon Saturday July 10th at 402 W. Waters Ave. Tampa, Fl. 33604, (at the Masonic Lodge Building).
Kristen and I have some great ideas for this group, but would like to hear from you too, what would you like to see, hear or do at these meetings, especially the first meeting. I hope to see y'all there.

Do the B12 injection once a month. It's real easy, I give myself and my fiance our shots, in the upper leg; five minutes once a month and it's all good. B12 injectable is also very cheap. It doesn't matter if you take the pills or the injection, you can't hurt yourself with too much B12, what your body doesn't need it just eliminates, you can't O.D. on it.
Good luck with our surgery.

Topic: RE: New to Florida
Jim, I am a patient of Dr. Kim who is at Celebration. He is great and from Lake Alfred it would probably only be 30 minutes max to Celebration. It would be an hour to Dr. Murr in Tampa. Dr. Kim has support groups too. I believe if you go to Florida Hospital Celebration the information about the support groups will come up. They have a general support group and another one that is run by a psychologist who has had RNY surgery for people that are over a year out. Hope this helps.

I take the sublingual once a day. Also, make sure you take that Vitamin D. I wasn't doing it because my calcium levels were so high when my blood work would come back. Now my vitamin D level is 12 and it should be around 40. I have to take 500,000iu of vitamin D twice a week.

Dr. Szomstein is a wonderful doctor... actually my revision from band to bypass was a complex one so both Drs. Rosenthal and Szomstein did my surgery ... had the best of both worlds.. All went well, no complications and they did it laparascopically. Have a great day. maryjo
