Had WLS on the 3rd, need advice
Hi everyone,
I had RNY surgery on the 3rd and have had a rough time till today. It's like I woke up feeling alot better. All week I felt bloated and had many aches and pains ( they also fixed a umbilcle hernia which they added a 3" incision under my belly button). I did not feel good on the clear liquids and today I started the full liquid and protien shakes. I have also all week had my stomach rumbling like a perculator after eating or drinking anything. Will this stop? Also I've had a problem with the liquids that go in, come out within a couple of hours both ways, if you know what I mean. I hope the protien shakes and yogurt slows that down. Also sometimes after I eat I feel very flushed and warm and almost nauseas. I know that I am not getting any sugar so I don't think it is dumping syndrome but I just wonder if anyone has had this problem right after surg.? Well today, I have had no pain or discomfort and the bloating has just about gone and back pain is gone, I am having trouble getting in all the food that is on my diet . But I am sipping all the time. If anyone has any advice or helpful hints let me know. Thanks again y'all be good, Heidi

Hi there..just wanted to let you know that rumblings that you hear now will be with you "forever" and it's quite normal for us to hear those rumblings it's the movement of fluid and gas in the GI tract - guess since our GI is rearranged we can hear it more now...but quite normal. As far as what you're feeling - you just had major surgery 3 days ago and are adjusting to the anthesthia - some people recover more quickly than other. Anything unusual check with your doctor immediately. Don't rush your fluids...it happens to all in the beginning. Just keep up with the walking (room to room in the house) just keep moving slowly around. Keep with the liquids and use your breathing apparatus if they gave you one. That bloating should go away within a few days but if not always call the doc's office. Good luck and hang in there!
Some of your questions I can't answer because I am still in this learning phase too. But I can tell you what I have been expeirencinng. My surgery was the 30th. I didn't like the clear liquids either it made me have diarrhea bad. So I started some full liquids at about 5 days out. My stomach does that perculator thing also. My family laughs because it is constantly making noise. Even though it is not like hunger growling. As for the bloating I took Mylanta gas chewables. They use alot of air during surgery and they it put into the abdominal cavity to spread the organs apart for better viewing. So those pains are gas. As for the flushed and nauseasated feelings I haven't expeirenced it, but I hear that sometimes people can be lactose intolerant after surgery, so are you mixing your protein with milk. That could be causing it. You mentioned the sipping. I too am tired of drinking. It seems like I am drinking all day long and still can't get in my 48oz. I think this just comes with the territory. I have noticed though at 11 days out my sips have been able to be larger and more at one time. Sorry so long. But thought that might help.
Hi Angie,
Hope all is well with you. I feel better today and everyday I get better. Maybe your right, and I am lactose intolerant now. But I can eat yogurt without abdominal discomfort. Well, I see my Doc tomarrow, so I will discuss all with him. Your right about the drinking, I can't get enough in all day. I try but I get maybe 40oz in, if that much. Well I'm glad your doing so well. Keep in touch and thanks for all the info. and your time.
thanks again, Heidi

Heidi, sometimes the proteins depending on what type they are can absorb a little quick and can cause some slight nausea, they are isolate proteins - still good for us though- just drink slowly. Whey protein is best, it are gentlier and readily absorbed into our systems. Even today, some foods non sugar, can cause me some discomfort and I just have to sit still awhile till it passes. We learn to listen to our pouches alot!!
Alot of the discomfort is from the air, anesthesia and trauma from surgery. You will continue to have difficulty getting in your food. That is why the protein shakes are so important. Do your best, but if you can't eat it, then be sure you are at least drinking 90-120 grams of whey protein a day! Good that you are sipping all the time. It wasn't till 8-9 months that I found I could chug some liquid down. Maybe I could do it at 6-7 months, but I never tried!
Remember to watch for all hidden sugars in your foods, stick with protein, fruits and veges. No carbs!!! no mashed potatoes, pudding or ice cream. Don't even think about them till after 6 months out!! Ketchup has sugar in it, so does miracle whip...even tiny amounts will set your stomach off, so be like a hound and ask when you eat out if any sugar is in anything (even like sweet relish in tarter sauce). You have to watch yourself, you do NOT want to dump...hopefully you will not, but if you do, you will learn a lession quickly. I hate dumping, and even though I watch carefully sometimes something slips by me or someone doesn't give me accurate information and I find out there was a little suga! Arg!!!
Each day will get better!
Blessings,
Tami
