I know I have so many questions and I trust that you all can answer them. I guess it is just my time to ask questions, maybe by the end of the year I can be the one answering them. How many calories is to few? I have only taken in about 90 calories since thursday. I am still on clear liquids and I am drinking 48 oz day, but it is mostly made up of crystal light, calorie free broth and popsicles with only 15 calories. I just don't want my body to go into starvation mode and think that it needs to hold onto extra calories. Any suggestions to clear fluids that might have a few calories if you think I need them?

Angie, I was only on clear liquids in the hospital. When I came home I was on full liquids including sf pudding, yogart, cream soups (strained). I was told to eat 2-4 oz at a time but no mention of the calorie intake at that time. As long as you are getting your fluids, I think it will be fine. How much longer until full liquids? By the way, they allowed me apple juice and cranberry juice in the hospital- those were the only 2 without too much sugar for us. You might want to try it- maybe mix with water to start out. Terri

clear liquids until I feel I am at the point I am drinking constantly then I can add full liquids. I guess I could probably start now, but am just a little scared.

Angie - you've just had MAJOR surgery and are in the liquid stages..follow the nutrition set for you by your doctor and don't necessarily think about it in calories. The important thing is to get the nutrition through protein and if you're doing 48oz you're doing well. The reason we lose so much weight is due to getting low amounts of calories in the beginning and throughout our journey. Later on when people gain weight is due alot more to liquid calories then food calories - I know this has happened to me. Liquid calories you say? Well, stuff like soups, jello, soft drinks, juices, things of that nature, mash potatoes all those are soft and liquid calories and can add up cause you can eat/drink more of it..however when ya do protein (later on for you, LOL) then you are more full for a longer period of time and thus more satisfied. You should be drinking every 1.5 - 2.hrs so I believe you should be okay - but if this bothers you call the office. Keep up the good work!!

Hey girlfriend.....you need to get your protein drinks in. They started those right away, and that will increase your caloric intake. Protein is important, forever. If you don't drink enough, your body will leech it from your muscles and when you lose weight you will find you lost muscle too, and that's not good. I don't worry about calories. I watch protein intake, and you need to have your 90 grams a day plus your fluids and vitamins. If you are eating proteins, fruits and vegetables, you won't be eating much fat anyway. Remember to rest too.....and walk, walk. hugs, Tami

my opion is that right now dont be worried about too much of things that you can not control. Follow the Diet as your doctor ordered. No skipping anything. you will then be okay. best wishes.

Angie - congratulations on your surgery! I agree with the posts above that mentioned the protein shakes....it's important to get your protein in and it doesn't take much water...I know it's hard in the beginning to get much fluid in....but you can mix up a good whey protein shake with 30 grams of protein and 3-4 ounces of water...do one if that's all you can do in the beginning and try to work up to three a day for 90 grams of protein. The protein will help you heal faster too. Nancy
