Hi all. Moving to Jacksonville, FL, at the end of August 2006 with my husband via the military. Can anyone tell me about the support group and bariatric program through the military? I had my surgery August 15, 2005, in Virginia and am doing well. Just curious to see how the program stacks up against the one here in the Hampton Roads area. Welcome to Florida. I don't know much about the support groups in Jacksonville but I know this board is great and if there is support group there someone will let you know where it is.

Hello, Tonya: I am a support group leader here in Jacksonville and would love to have you join my group. I recently purchased a house to hold the meetings in so we wouldn't be rushed out of the library or told to be a little quietier or even asked to leave so somebody else could use the room. I wanted to have a clothing exchange and a product exchange so....I bought the house. There are several support groups here in Jacksonville. Which station are you and your husband coming to? I don't know anything about a military support group but, again, I'd love to have you join us and can certainly direct you to a group that will be close to where you'll be living. Hope to hear from you soon. You're going to love Florida. La Wanda

We're being stationed at NAS Jacksonville, so will most likely be on the Westside or Orange Park area. Depends on many factors. Like if his new squadron is being deployed close to our rotation date, if we can find a house cheap enough, get stuck in an apt again, etc. :P But also, I have a now 2yr old child who, most likely will be attending the meetings with me as I can't really afford babysitters. So, any support group will have to allow for small children. (She does get loud, but I refuse to let her disrupt the meetings as I take her outside until she calms down, but she's also a charmer.) Thanks again, Tonya

Tonya, You will coming into JAX NAS just before Im leaving! I cant give you much info on the support group or program here on base as I went off the MTF for surgery. Sorry.. I can give you some phone numbers and names so that you have them when you arrive.. I personally love this base .. Small, clean, and pretty friendly.. The shopping on base isnt the best as it is a small base, but there is plenty other things around! Hope you like this area! Email me if you need anything.. Amber M*

Here you go...Naval Hospital Jax has a bariatric surgery program based out of their general surgery clinic. They have support group once a month. I have just started the program, and so far the support group is more of an educational program with some socializing.

Welcome to the sunshine state! You'll love it here. I've been here for 9 years now and it is a great place to live. City life, with the small town feel. I'm pre-op (scheduled for 4/5) and attend support group meetings at Memorial Hospital. I believe it is the 3rd Thursday of every month. I'd be glad to be your buddy when you arrive... just let me know. Steph
