PreOP, debating, studying procedures and looking for surgeons..AND...HELP.
Hello All,
Let me say that I admit I am a complete rookie with this stuff. I wanted to share what I think I have learned so far.
I am currently researching different procedures and I am leaning towards LAP Band (adjustable). I think I might have found a surgeon in Ocala, Dr. Jawand. I live in Port Saint Lucie but I am willing to drive the 3 hours because he seems to be the most experienced in Florida, with the best patient feedback (both pre and post op), best records, 1 fatality in 2,250 procedures. Has anyone had a procedure with him?
I would like to find someone closer but they don't have his training, certifications or experience, not to mention his outstanding record. The other surgeries seem to be higher risk, longer recovery times, more post op complications and none of them can be adjusted as time goes by. Plus the weight loss is supposedly more gradual with this procedure and the associated skin sagging is said to be less. He also accepts my insurance (Uinted HEALTHCARE) which is a big financial consideration.
Anyone have a different take on this? Does this sound right? Any help/advice concerning procedures, insurance or surgeons would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ed
I am scheduled to have lap band surgery with Dr. Jawad on April 5th. I chose him becasue of his excellent reputation and recommendations from OH folks who had him also. I live two hours away, but feel, like you do, better to find the best surgeon.
I will meet him for the first time this coming Friday. Everyone speaks very highly, not only of his skills as a surgeon, but his demeanor as well.
While he has not done as many lap bands as RNY's, I feel very comfortable with his level of expertise and I am sure he has performed more than most surgeons in this area.
I visited with three surgeons in the area (group consults) and found him to be the best for me.
Good luck with your decison.
Hi Mary,
That is great. I feel the same way about him. Can you keep in touch, I would really like to hear how you make out with him? I am scheduled for April 4, 2006 for my intial consult with him. I just hope my insurance pays for the LAP Band (United Healthcare)? I have heard a lot of them don't because they consider it too new of a procedure. Best of luck to you and I hope to hear from you again.

Hi Ed,
Have you considered Dr. Beatty (Stuart / PSL)? He's doing surgery at St. Lucie Medical Center. I haven't had it done yet but hope to within the next couple of months. And, if you need a support group, we meet at the medical center once a month, on the 3rd Wednesday night, and the 3rd Saturday morning for those of us who can't make the night meeting. Whatever your decision though, I wish you well.
