New to this site dont know where to start
Go to the main part of obesity help site and start clicking on the links to learn about gastric bypass etc. There are good docs in ocala, and mine Dr Kim in celebration. Basically, once you understand the surgery and potential complications, you get a letter of medical necessity from your primary doctor. YOu complete a psych evaluation and whatever gastric bypass doc you go with submits your information for insurance approval. Hope this helps. There is also some pre and post op info on my profile that might help you. Keep us posted!

Aisha,
I am in Jacksonville also. There are several support groups that meet in the area that are open to those who are pre op as well as post op. I went to one this morning that meets on the 1st and 3rd Satueday each month in teh Regency area. There is a post from LaWanda who is the leader of this group on this list of messages from either Thursday or Friday. As Tami suggested your first step is to start doing research about the different surgeries available but I would also suggest finding a good group meeting to help along the way. I get lots of good information from the one I go to that is useful now (I am pre op) and will be equally useful after surgery.
If you would like more info or if I can help you please feel free to email me directly @ [email protected]
Good luck on your new journey and I hope we have an opportunity to meet each other.
Kat
Aisha-
I believe the first thing you should do is to research the different weight loss surgeries. There is more than one surgery. There are three that are the more commonly done they are the RNY or gastric bypass, the adjustable lap band , and the duodenal switch. Then there is the sleeve gastrectomy and vertical banded gastroplasty. Each of the surgeries has its own advantages and disadvantages. And if you talk to someone who has had any one of these procedures they will tell you that the procedure they had done is the best.
I strongly urge you to study all of the procedures before making up your mind. Most of these procedures have their own message board here at OH where you can ask people who have had the surgery questions. That is a very good way to learn and the people on the boards generally will be able to refer you to additional materials. I have included a link to the page where you will find the drop down menu for "surgery type forums". Just click on the surgery type and it will take you to a page where you can then select to go to the message board.
Good luck to you.
