Hey all how have you been? I had a questions.......I have been feeling very sluggish. I am not sure why. I cannot get out of bed in the morning and I am always tired. Can someone help? I believe that I am really getting all my protein in so what else can I do? Would B-12 pills help me to gain some more energy? I was told from my doctor that I really don't need to take them. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated Thank you, Candy C. LOL

Oh my gosh!! Absolutely you need B-12!!! The part of your intestines that is bypassed is where your B-12 is normally absorbed. If you Google intrinsic factor you will find info. on it... you absolutely need either a B-complex or a B-12 supplement... you will definitely feel better after taking them. No wonder you're tired!! Hope this helps! Go to the store.. now... go... ~ Monica OH Support Group Leader

Thanks for the update. I think I will go and get that on my lunch break today at work. I hope that it helps me. Is the B-12 better or the B-Complex? Is there any difference? Candice

Candy, YES - you absolutely need B-12!! I take 1 - 500 mcg B-12 sublingual (melts under your tongue) each day as per my surgeon's requirements. I buy Rexall brand micro-lozenges at Wal-Mart (I think) they're sort of a cherry flavor (not bad) and a bottle of 200 is only about $4. I did some research after reading that recent studies are showing that some gastric bypass patients are having problems b/c they have low B-1 and other B vitamins. I decided to also add a B-50 Complex to my daily supplements. My labs have been fantastic and although I never felt particularly tired or weak, I can tell an improvement in my energy level since I added the B-50 Complex. They come B-50 or B-100, the 100 has 2x the 50 so you can decided which works best for you. I hope you're also taking a good, multi-vitamin and calcium citrate. No one knows for sure exactly how much any of us malabsorb, so it is imperative that we supplement our food intake in order to prevent malnutrition with all of its physical complications. OK - I'll get off my soapbox now! Vickie J.

No, no you are not on a soap box. I am glad to get this feedback. I do take my vitamin but I forget a lot. I really am a bad patient. LOL anyhow I appreciate your help. I did buy the sublingual b-12 high potency from walmart. I hope that is what the problem is. Thanks again, Candice

Candy, The surgeons at our hospital have take 500mcg twice a day or a monthly injection of 1000mcg. If your B-12 level gets too low for a long enough period of time it can cause irreversible nerve and brain damage. Please start taking it and I would also recommend you have some blood work done asap. The other possibility may be that your iron level is too low. Do you take an iron supplement? You may want to have that level checked also. Best of luck to you, Julie

Candy - two other possibilities are low sugars and anemia. Have you had any labs done? I'm also sluggish in the morning (obviously due to sleeping and not getting in any nutrients). I have my 2 children's chewable and my calcium citrate. I don't get my B-150 until the middle of the day. If you haven't checked your sugar or blood levels - do check them out. As women we lose lose a lot of blood during our menstrual cycle and this could be an underlying cause to tiredness and slugglishness at times. Your B levels affect the nervous system but that would be WELL over when you haven't taken any B vitamins for a long period of time.
