Numb Legs????
Hi all
I am 2 months post op and I have this "odd" question.
Has anyone experienced numbness in your legs? The numbness is more surface oriented than whole leg. It's also just around my lower thighs and upper calf, yeah right above, the knee and below the knee.
My surgeon doesn't seem to be too terribly concerned. He seems to think its a side effect of nutrition (lack there of.)
I have a hard time with protien shakes, as the texture of them just makes me gag---http://images.obesityhelp.com/mbgraphics/emoticons/barf.gifseriously. So I am really good about getting protien via cheese, other dairy and poultry.
Anyone have suggestions? Similar experience? http://images.obesityhelp.com/mbgraphics/emoticons/help.gif
Thanks
Cindy
Yes, I had numbness on the right side of my right leg. I had nerve damage. It can also cause "foot drop" The damage was caused by rapid weight loss and crossing my leg and damaging the nerve (I cannot remember the name ). It goes right below your knee, down the leg and to the top of your foot to the big toe. The good news is that it can repair it self. It takes about 2 months per inch for the nerve to "wake up".
I first noticed the tingling, numbness and then stumbling due to not picking up my feet. I felt very clumsy and could not keep on my flip flop type shoes. I had to concentrate when I walked to pick up my feet.
My doctor had me go to a specialist to have a nerve conduction test to see how much damage I had.
Did you ask your primary care physician?
Are you getting regular blood work done? I get mine checked every quarter.
I went to a specialist at our local Bone and Joint CLinic. After exrays and an MRI the conclusion was I had early stages of DDD. I have a pain that runs from my lower back down my right side which keeps me from sleeping at night. Also, I have a numbness that runs from my right hip down through my knee into my feet at times. I have had 3 Epidural shots and now they have seemed to wear off
I am seeing my Surgeon next week for my 1 year anniversary. I hope he has some ideas from there.
and Best Wishes
Becky

Push the issue with the doc. I think the first avenue to check is vit b like Red said, that is most common. Your blood work will tell the story on that, so if it hasn't been taken recently get it rechecked.
Then if its not vit b, continue pushing with the doc till this gets resolved. Whatever it is, remember a squeeky hinge gets oiled.
We all have to be on top of our lab values like hound dogs. Can't leave it to the docs to catch everything.
Vit b deficiency can be dangerous, do not delay!
