OT: Sept Wedding in Key West, Am I Nuts?

Hi Florida Peoples! I am in Alabama, and planning a late September wedding. We are going to "elope" so it'll just be the 2 of us at the wedding (OK and an officiant and witness). We love the idea of Key West, as neither of us has ever been & we LOVE a great road trip. But...many wedding planners down there are saying "we don't do weddings from June 1 to November 1 due to hurricane season" so I'm getting the idea I may be kind of nuts to even consider going down there to get married in late September. Moving the date is not an option, unfortunately. We can go other places of course, but...we both had our hearts set on the Keys & Key West. So...am I nuts? Should I give up on this idea & go somewhere else?

Congratulations of your upcoming wedding. I live 1/2 north of Miami and know late September is a ify month for hurricanes. The problem is if you are down there and there is a hurricane warning you will have to leave the Keys. They order tourists out first. Sept, Oct and even early Nov are active hurricane months. I don't mean to rain on your parade but its the truth. Good Luck Priscilla

I don't think you're nuts at all, but I have a SWELL idea for you because hurricanes do abound at that time of year. Continue to plan the best you can for your September Key West wedding, BUT make a good contingency plan for the same time to somewhere like Savannah, Georgia or Charleston, South Carolina or another location that appeals to you. There's very little chance that there would be 2 hurricanes at the same time in both places. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! It sounds fantastic and I'm so excited for you! Can I be your flower girl? Jan

Thanks for the replies! Jan, that is something we actually talked a little about, having a back-up plan for somewhere on the mainland that's less hurricane-prone.The scary thing about the Keys is that whole one-way-in-and-out thing! I love both Savannah & Charleston - those are great ideas. Thank you! Of course, you think I'd want to go anywhere BUT the beach - last year we planned a trip to Biloxi for 8/25-28. As the time came around for us to leave for Biloxi, Katrina started brewing, but all the projections showed her heading east. So we kept our reservations and went on down to Biloxi as planned. We had a great weekend, but it got scary as Katrina turned west & everything around us was being boarded up. Then the Weather Channel set up in our hotel & broadcast from outside our room! (You know your weekend at the beach is in trouble when....)... We left Sunday morning 8/28 an hour before they called for mandatory evacuations. 48 hours later, the hotel we stayed in was totally wiped out, along with every place we ate, drank, and even the roads we drove on...gone. Hmm. Maybe we should think about Maine or something... We'll keep working on it. Thanks again for the replies! Kathy

Kathy, Congrats on your upcoming wedding! It does sound like maybe you've used up your bad weather mo-jo, but you never know! With my luck, if I planned for Maine, they'd have a blizzard!!! My son is planning an OUTDOOR wedding in Oct. on top of a mountain in NC. Can you say cold, windy, rainy and/or a freak early snow/ice storm??? Those are my nightmares!! They are being married at my brother's estate but are planning for everything, including the reception, to be held outside. I guess her family will be renting those lovely tents that have drop down walls with "windows", just in case of bad weather. Just remember, no matter what happens to foul up your "dream" wedding, all that matters is that you love each other & that you get legally married!! Vickie J.
