Hi everyone. I'm 8 days post op (Lap-RNY) and I am having a problem taking my metformin and lipitor because the dr wants them crushed. The Dr's office said to mix it with s/f applesauce - but this is making me gag and want to throw up Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get these horse pills down? I don't have an option - I have to take them for my diab and high cholestrol. Other than being a little tired which I make sure I rest alot. Thanks everyone! Barbi

Barbara, I was going to suggest pudding or yogurt as Alexa did. I used to use SF pudding a lot at work to give elderly pts. crushed meds with. Good Luck! Kat

You don't have a G-tube where you can put them down? I assume you don't, so you'll have to tough it out and mix it anyway you can! Good luck!! Jan

Thanks for the suggestions! I also emailed my nutritionist and she say the same thing. She also mentioned one of her patients used RANCH DRESSING Well I'm off to try and mix it in the pudding - let's see what happens. Barbi

Not about the gagging . . . you need to check about the metformin. Crushing may be contraindicated. Check with the endocrinologist. Also, what are your numbers like? I went off the glucophage (metformin) at surgery, never wwent back on, and I was a terribly insulin resistent type two diabetic. Check with your endocrinologist. He may have you defer it for now, considering the difficulty swallowing it. good luck.

you're an Thank you. I couldn't bear to crush the metformin so I just swallowed it whole. Let's see what happens. I'm a type II diabetic as well but my endro switched me from actos to Metformin on Monday, but I do have to monitor 4/day. Right now my readings have been pretty good but not perfect. 119/113/129 Thank again for the link and the info. Barbi

Man, Barbi-Doll, those numbers are GREAT!!! I would START my day fasting with numbers in the 200s, and that was WITH 2500 mg Metformin a day and 100 units of Lantus insulin at night *AND* regular insulin with meals! You are going to do just GREAT.
