diabetes and WLS
Today I saw my endocrinologist. He dismissed me since my diabetes is
controlled now by diet alone and has been since gastric bypass in
February. But...he gave me news that in an average of 5-10 years my
pancreas will fail and the diabetes symptoms such as high blood sugar
etc will return.
Does anyone know of any sites with long term results of gastric bypass?
I've only been successful so far in finding one. I really need to
read this information for myself in studies because what he told me
today just floored me. I understand if I gained the weight back I
would end up back on insulin and meds but not that no matter what in a
decade I'll be back on more meds. I wouldn't trade having the surgery
for anything but the surgeon, my doctor, and the endocrinologist never
gave me this information before I had surgery. This is the first I've
heard of it and I still am kind of in shock.

I would consult the surgeon and see if he agrees with your endocrinologist. I had type II diabetes and was treated by my PCP and 2 months out of surgery stopped taking meds cause now Im normal - and not normal cause sometimes i get low blood sugar symptoms. Using common sense I would tend to agree that if the weight comes back on that it would occur that my high sugars could return..but the thing to keep in mind is to NOT allow that to happen. We did this to be healthy so I wouldn't worry about the 'what if' though it wouldn't hurt to be informed. Keep on track by staying informed and get supported. Are you going to a support group?
Stephanie-
In know that in Europe they are doing the intestinal portion of the DS surgery on people who are not obese because it cures diabetes. You might want to look at some of the european studies and see what they say. Or drop an email to Dr. Baltasar in Spain. You will find his contact info on his website. He might be able to provide you with some of the information for which you are looking. Also there is a clinical trial being conducted at I believe it is the University of Mississippi about the DS to cure diabetes. I mention the DS because that is what I am the most familiar with, but I am sure there are correlations between the DS and the RNY when it comes to diabetes. Good luck I hope you find the information for which you are looking.

OoHH, MD's like that honk me off. He could have given you printed material on this subject, if he truly had any. Most endo's hate this surgery. They loose busines. ok off my platform.
Do your own Google and find out. A lot depends on your past history, how long you were on insulin, how resistant your body was to it's own insulin and all sorts of these questions. Take the surgery and it potential promise to heart. Don't ever gain weight again. Watch your carbs. Exercise like your life depends on it. It does. I would like to hear from some 10 year post op patients how they are doing what has changed for them.
I am not off my pump, like we hoped but I am using less than 10% of the insulin i was using 5 days ago. What a change. And my blood sugars are better every morning. Anyway-take heart and feel good about the effort you made and do your own research.
