Protein shake intolerance..

Anyone know why some people can tolerate protein shakes and why others can not. We're supposed to have the protein and this would seem to help. I bought the atkins protein shake and attempted to drink it today - a bit more slowly with sips of water in between - and manage after a while to take it down but almost right away - and for a while - I felt nauseated. I'm trying to switch to more liquids this week to see if I can trick my body to move but it seems I can't tolerate the shakes. What could be in there that makes some people ill? Anyone researched this?

I have no idea but I would love to know the answer. I never have been good with the protein shakes. I drank Carbdown milk (white and chocolate, yum) and then I made carnation breakfast drinks. They have a sugar free and then skim milk. Pretty good protein and great taste. Chocolate is my favorite and I do well with it. Good luck. Just keep trying, I guess. Carol

Hi Ruth I am not sure if I will tolerate well post op. But I use the strawberry whey made by gnc add low fat milk and a half of banana. It totally changes the taste of it. Which is so much better.

Ruth-It may have something to do with the milk and lactose intolerance. I use powders exclusively and haven't had any problems. However I have had big problems with milk based products all along. I can have a little bit of milk in coffee or something, but if I actually mix a drink or attempt to have cereal with milk--blah! I am not supposed to have cereal but occasionally, especially early out I just had an overwelming urge for something substantial. Every time I tried cream of wheat I would get sick.

I started having problems with any milk products right after my surgery. I tried different Protien shakes and could not handle them. I am now 17 months after surgery and do not drink protein shakes. I use meat and cheese and eggs to meet the protein needs. One thing I try to do is make sure I have the blood test done quarterly to make sure I am still ok. Thank goodness I can eat chicken and beef and shrimp with little to no problem. I also found cashews are high in portein and I snack with them and pretzels. (But again I am careful to the amount I eat.) Good luck. I suggest you find what is best for you. I decided a long time ago not to sweat the small stuff and beat myself to death when I could not go exactly "by the book". As long as your levels are good and you are maintaining at your goal weight, what else could you ask?

Hi Ruth...I don't know the answer to that, but I tried Unjury protein samples in Chocolate and Vanilla and I was able to drink them without feeling like I wanted to To me they taste like the sugar-free Carnation Instant Breakfast. I had tried others (can't remember the brand) given to me by the nutritionist right after surgery and they tasted horrible. Unjury also makes an unflavored one which, from what I hear, is good to mix with soups, put in coffee, make jello, etc. Why don't you order some samples? I have trouble with meats and at least this way I can get my protein in. Of course I eat cheese, deli meats, yogurt, but it's still not enough. Hope this helps! Becky
