Grazing...

I'm out 9 1/2 months and have done pretty well...but these last few days I've noticed that I've been grazing..now I'm aware of it but haven't done much to stop it - and today was particularly bad. The foods have not been to bad (except for the 3 bites of donut and 3 bites of tiramisu) but still. Hoo hoo hum....ummm...I can only hope it's hormonal - but even then I don't wanna go there. How have you handled this "grazing" period?

Ruth--I believe that grazing is the easiest way to eat around the RNY. It is something I struggle with immensly, that is why I try to warn people who are early out about it. I really believe that my nutritionist was right about not snacking (even though I didn't agree with her at the time)--we have to develop good habits. We have to stay away from snacking all together--cause it starts with the good stuff. I hardly eat any bad stuff, but enough of the good stuff can become a problem. A couple weeks ago I tried to warn a newbie about it and she thought I was insulting her, really I wasn't trying to. I really don't have an answer for you. Sorry-wish I did, but if you figure it out let me know. Good luck to you.

Ruth, I'm 10 months out and have just noticed this is becoming more of a problem for me, too. The loss is slowing down now and I can eat more, so I need to plan my meals and then get in the habit of nothing in between. I also find that if I can distract myself by doing something, hopefully using my hands, the urge to snack passes. It's amazing how I wasn't hungry for so long after surgery and it was a great feeling, but now I'm starting to feel like my old self again, and it's scary!!! Snacking can kill your loss and putting sugar into your mouth and making poor choices is also a disaster! Get into good habits right from the get-go!! Like Lynda said, the best time to develop a new way of eating is right from the start!! Now that we're out a few months, we still need to take ourselves in hand. Just imagine the battles we will have when we're 2 or 3 years out! I have a friend who ate chocolate covered graham crackers when she was less than 2 weeks out and I wondered to myself whether she would make it long-term if she can't stay away from trigger foods that soon after major surgery!?!? Good luck Ruth, and good luck to me too, because I'm struggling also!! Jan -104 lbs.
