Insurance Question
Presently I'm insured with Humana, but I've accepted a new job and will be switching to Blue Cross Blue Shield. Does BCBS still approve WLS? I've heard and seen conflicting things. So, I just wanted to see if anyone knows anything. I pray that I can get this surgery done before I leave Humana. Thanks for all your help!!
Keva,
BCBS is very confusing. It reallly depends on which type of policy your employer has. My wls was covered by BCBS of NJ. It is my understanding that BCBS of FL is still covering WLS for State of FL employees and Federal employees. However, I hear that most non-governmental employers have dropped WLS from their BCBS policies. My advice is to read your new policy closely for any exclusions. Good luck!

Keva,
I am a state employee and have BCBS. I am in the process of trying to get approval. They require 6 months of dr supervised dieting, 5 years of documented weight, a psych eval, a nutrition eval (which they don't pay for), you must meet the definition of severe morbid obesity, and it must go in front of a medical review board.
You need ALL of that? I will finish my 6 months of dr. supervised this month, so that's one thing down. I also have my psych eval and nutrition eval. I have five years of trying to loose weight, but I have to find everything. I did weigh****chers a few times, joined a gym, and was on two or three weight loss medications. I can't beleive it has to go in front of a medical review board! I pray I can get this completed before I switch over in August. Thanks for your information!
