Anyone have problems with walking before WLS???
I am disabled, but can walk some. Not very far and not very long. I also can not stand for very long. Anyone else have the same problem??? I want the surgery but am concerned about the walking. I also don't have much upper body strength. This is due to my back and having surgery on it. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
E-mail this person. http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/profile.phtml?N=B1055947019

Roiann,
Oh darlin, I can totally relate to having back pain prior to my WLS. I wouldnt say I was officially disabled (due to injury or an accident), but I could not stand or walk for more than 5 minutes without my back seizing up on me. Pumping gas was an effort, when I needed a few things from the grocery store, I would have to plan out the best route in the store that would take the least amount of time and effort. Words can not describe how humiliating, frustrating and painful my back pain was. I can honestly say that had I not had my WLS last June, I don't think I would still be around today because I could not handle the pain and limitations it forced on my life.
Now...let's focus on the good part
, actually within a matter of my first 50lbs lost, I noticed my back pain was getting better. By 100lb lost, my pain was virtually gone. Today, I no longer suffer thru life watching it pass me by on the sidelines ~ I am a player, I participate, I walk, run, jump thru life. I even stood at a concert for over 4 hrs a couple weeks ago and managed to do so without ever sitting down.
I know your situation is much different than mine, but I wanted to share with you how my obesity impacted my back and how losing the weight has released me from that pain and frustration. I know how difficult it was to struggle thru day-to-day functions and have to put so much thought into everything to avoid pain. There is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel!
Good luck to you!
Amy

Roiann I am so sorry you are struggling here. I went thru simular problems two years ago. It hurt so bad even to do simple things. And there was lots of things I could not do at all. My doc sent me to physical therapy. They sent me to swimming aerobics. That helped me alot. I still hurt alot. But I can now walk far more than I was. I couldnt even walk across my living room without sitting to take a break. There was also a video tape out made by Richard Simmmons which helped it was called Sittin Tight. For disabled. I started out doing the video at a slow pace until eventually I could do the entire tape. Hope things get better for you soon. Vickie
Have the same problem here...
I have 3 herniated discs in my lower back and used to use a scooter for everything. I would sit to do dishes. Now I just use a scooter if I am doing Walmart for a bunch of things...
Take it one step at a time. I did (still do) chair dancing
and have some arm weights too. The pool has been a huge help.
You can check out my profile, as things have changed, I can do more. Soon I will see where I can do even more...
Blessings!
~Tina~
