passed out lastnight...
Hi everyone, went to dinner lastnight...had scallops. A couple hours later went to get out of my car...stood up, couldn't catch my breath, got lightheaded, couldn't talk, couldn't move limbs. Fell onto my knees at my car door and in a very groggy voice managed to tell my 14 yr old to call 911. VERY SCARY. Called my surgeon today, told them what happened. Don't know if I have become allergic to shell fish (my mom is...and she is also allergic to iodine.) I had a problem with my last surgery post-op (not WLS) and they had a hard time raising my blood pressure. We wonder now if I had a reaction to iodine...never had before. I called my surgeons office, they won't run anyother tests but I will not have my surgery until I know what happened...blood pressure? shell fish allergy? I need a good primary doctor in Pensacola...I don't have a doctor here yet! One who is not anti-WLS. I already have my letter from my old primary, but she is out of state. I don't want to be preached by the a new doctor.
Any leads would be appreciated.
Thanks, Laurie
Laurie,
I too am allergic to shellfish but don't have as severe a reaction as what you had. I just get violently sick to my stomach. Because of this, the doctors won't do x-rays that require certain contrast mediums be injected (especially kidney x-rays) because they contain iodine. I don't have any problems with the iodine in my multi-vitamin or using iodized salt. It is the iodine in the shellfish that most people have a reaction to.
In order to find a wls-friendly doc in Pennsacola call the surgeon (Is Dr. Nye in that area?) and ask what PCP's he likes to work with, who is wls friendly.
Good luck on your journey!
Vickie J.
