Viactive Chew Vitamins
Hey everyone...I bought these to try them out as I hear a lot of people say that they have a hard time swallowing vitamins after surgery. I am pre-op, but doing as much research as possible to make the transition easy. Viactive (the chewable clacium folks) have a new chewable vitamin out there. I have severe IBS, so I take their calcium chews...and I tried the vitamin (fruit punch flavor) with my other calcium chews (orange, strawberry and caramel) and they aren't bad at all (in my opinion.) Just thought I'd share.

I use them also. There are some people that say we don't absorb these. This is what my nutritionist put me on from my first week post-op and they must work, because my calcium level is actually high. I have only tried the chocolate one, I guess I will have to give the other flavors a try as well. Mayra
the multi vits are ok... BUT they do not contain iron... so you would have to take an iron supplement...
the calicum that is in viactive is NOT the correct calicum... we need the citrate type... this is because we need the stomach acids to break it down.. and we dont have that anymore... it wont bind to your bones... means you will get bone loss...
The whole calcium citrate ve carbonate debate continues...
My surgeon doesn't promote only calcium citrate and to be honest, I've been taking Viactive for many months and my labs are perfect and so is my iron without having to take a supplement. I guess it just depends on your individual diet and genetics (to some degree) whether you need more or less of something. The main thing is to get your labs checked so you dont fall short somewhere.

The only way to truly check your calcium level is to get a dexa-scan done on your bones. The labs are reading what is in your blood and your body will leach the calcium from your bones for what it needs and your labs will read fine. Calcium citrate is more readily aborbed by the body than calcium carbonate, even by "normal" people who haven't had WLS.
My opinion is: why take the chance? I have read dozens of stories of people who take the take the wrong calcium or who don't take any, and they are paying for it with dental problems and weak bones.
