Has anyone had a BMI below 40 and approved for wls? I went for my consultation (sp?) 4/6 and I have dropped to 38.3 only 1.7 away but do you think this could hurt my chances to get approved? I have high blood pressure but not on meds, doctor was hoping that me losing weight would help it.Please I really need words of encouragement. Thanks Jerrie

Yes, mine was 39.7. I had to provide 5 years of weight loss records, my doctor wrote co morbids, leg edema, pre diabetic, high blood pressure. If your doctor will work with you it helps. Mine had to write an appeal letter. If you h ave been going to the md and get your weight taken, and he has been supervising your weight loss it should work for you. Keep appealing, it will work hopefully!

Jerrie, my BMI was less than 40. I had uncontrolled high blood pressure, GERD (acid reflux), my knees hurt. I had a strong family history of early stroke. I was approved by my husband's insurance in four days. Several government guidelines consider women morbidly obese with a BMI over 35, men are rated at morbidly obese at 40 BMI. Of course, each insurance is different but I wish you the best. I lost fast and dropped at one point nearly 15 pounds below my personal goal of 130. I'm pretty stable (and thin) now at 118........a big difference from 230 pounds 16 months ago. I wish you well in your journey. I know you are just beginning. Know from one who had less than 100 pounds to lose, it can be done. The only pills I take now are my vitamins. My BP today was 122/78 -- pretty good and better yet..........no prescription medications are necessary to control it. God bless. Ruthanna

I have not heard this...most insurances won't approve it if the person is not 100 lbs or more overweight or has many co-morbities but if you can do it on your own..GREAT....the thing is the reason we have it is because we can't do it on our own. There are several factors can hel*****t help you get the surgery..that being your PCP, Psych doc (if you get the eval done) and even the surgeon and of course the insurance. If you feel you can do this one your own - Great..my sis was able to lose 110 lbs on her own while I couldn't and even though trying many diets I finally got to the point where I made this decision. I wish you lots of luck in whatever you decide. I pray that you will find the medical support you need to make this journey. I think only those docs can answer your question. My fingers are crossed for you.

Jerrie, It all depends on your insurance company, and who is reviewing your paperwork. The more co-morbidities the better to get approved at a lower BMI.
