has anyone had a problem with gout. I am 5 weeks post op and have had two bouts with gout. The first was treated with prednosolone and went away within three days. I just got the second over the weekend.
I am going back to the doctor this afternoon. I think it may be due to the high protein diet we are on. The staple of my diet have been chicken
beef and eggs. Any clue. Any help appreciated. please reply before my 2:00 PM appointment
ive read this:
Gout is a systemic disease (i.e., condition that occurs throughout the body) caused by the buildup of uric acid in the joints. An elevated blood level of uric acid (called hyperuricemia****urs when the liver produces more uric acid than the body can excrete in the urine, or when a diet high in rich foods (e.g., RED MEAT, cream sauces, red wine) produces more uric acid than the kidneys can filter from the blood.
Gout is caused by the buildup of uric acid in the joints. Approximately 18% of people who develop gout have a family history of the condition, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Diseases and conditions that increase the risk include diabetes, OBESITY, kidney disease, and sickle cell anemia.
good luck... hope all goes well

Stu, sorry about the gout...after reading Alexa's reply I would think if you increased your water intake a lot that it would help to flush the kidneys and maybe reduce the chance of the acid build-up.
Also, I am surprised you could take predisone, expecially at 5 weeks PO. I was prescribed a 9-day course for sciatic nerve pain last fall...5 days into the course I thought my pouch was gonna explode. Burning pain that would not stop for anything. The predisone was doing a number on it. I had to stop and she put me on nexium for a month. I am staying away from predisone from now on.
Anyway, I hope you feel better.
